View Full Version : Who here has ATV's??

I bought a 2004 Polaris 700 Sportsman last month. It has a Warn 3K winch, EFI, GY Run Flats, Hand and throttle warmers, front bumper and custom fuel can holder on the back:pimp:
I haven't rode it since I left Utah after the Elk hunt. It had an exhaust leak so when we got back to my Dads house i dropped it off at the dealer.
I am picking it up this weekend in Cedar City, Utah and will be going on a trail ride with my Dad and Brothers.
So who else is into ATV's?

I'm into ATV's. I use mine for work from May to September. I have a 2004 Polaris Scrambler 500HO 4x4 and during those months I am irrigating and spend a couple hours every morning pounding through the trails around the ranches from one water box to the next.
We also have a 700 sportsman, ours is an '02 carb model. The thing is a tank, and will pull anything. That sucker will push small hay bails around. My dad has an '05 Limited Edition Grizzly 660 and we have a '99 Polaris Xplorer 400 2 stroke 4x4 that I use as my sprayer quad and it's the extra machine for guest riders.

I have ATV's, but the opposite end of the spectrum as you guys - sport quads.

I just bought a little 110cc for my son. Does that count? Yes, I put my 230lb. butt on it and ride it around too! :pimp:

I have a 2004 honda rancher 350s and 2001 foreman 450es. I run the rancher 7 days a week on the farm getting up cows and feeding calves. The foreman is more of a trail/mud rider for me, but is used alot on the farm too.

Really?? i think you are just brand biased:stir: rotfl J/K I actually have no idea what is good or not. I have a friend w/ a couple of Grizzlys and he likes them alot. rides them on trails, sand , moab, and anything in between. I havent ridden one yet. All I know is I want a big azz engine, 4wheel independant susp, 4x4 w/lockers, winch, Fuel injection, and auto trans. I am sure there are alot of ATVs out there like that but I dont know what. I will deffinatly do more research before I buy though. (it probably will be at least a year)

I will deffinatly do more research before I buy though. (it probably will be at least a year) I will say I'm biased towards Polaris since I ride their sleds and quads but I have 1st hand experience with the grizzly vs. the SP700 Polaris in a bunch of conditions. Our '02 700 SP is dead even with my dad's '05 Grizzly in a drag race. The newer EFI 700's are supposed to have just a tad more pep than the older carbed versions like ours. The Polaris is an all around tougher quad, it's built for hard work and it's tough as a tank. It's plain bigger than the Grizz, bigger stance and bigger tires. The 700 is twin and has a great sound besides the fact that it makes a ton of torque with a nice power curve. THe Grizz has a goofy sound from it's single coffee can piston but I will say it's snappy. It's 5 valves are a good design.
I will say my dad's Grizz will out handle the Sportsman. It's about 100lbs lighter, the Grizz is impressive on the scale, it's only 30lbs heavier than my 4x4 Scrambler sport quad. It does handle quick in tight space, a little better than the Sportsman. What I really like is the SP800, it's an animal.
Both are great quads, the SP700 is definantly tougher and will survive under hard use plowing feed on a dairy or snow during the winter vs. the ligher duty Grizzly but I will say the Grizz is a little better for Recreation riding. For what I do with our quads, the SP700 fits the bill better than the Grizzly. Regardless, I like my Scrambler the best. It is a 4x4 sport quad and is faster than both, automatic tranny, and a rear rack. I can do all of my summer work with it without the worry of getting stuck but can pull the rack off the back and hang with buddies on their Predators, YFZ's, and Raptors on everything but the big air jumps.

No prob Brent. One thing that I have learned about personall power sports like these is that some brands just fit better than other for some people. My body "fits" better on Polaris sleds better than the Cats, and it's opposite for my dad. It all depends on the person with this stuff.

Does it count if it's my brothers quad but I ride it all the time? He Has an 05 Artic Cat 500 with 27" itp tires. With the Artic cats massive suspension travel and ground clearnce he was able to soften the suspension up all the way and it rides like a caddy.

I'm into ATVing as well but I don't have an ATV currently. I'm planning on getting a Kawasaki KFX700(formerly known as the Vforce)sport quad after I move in April. I test rode one recently, and I'd have to say that its a blast to ride.

Closest competition for the Scrambler. I like the KFX with it being a 700 twin and auto but no 4x4, have to have 4x4. I lot of people think Polaris is going to drop their 700 or 800 twin into the Scrambler, I hope so.

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from on the need for 4x4. But, I don't have that need because the type of ATV riding I do is what sport quads are designed for. I also like the fact that the KFX700 has an automatic trans.

Technically, the KFX is more of a cross country type quad it memory serves. I hardly ever use 4wd when using it for recreation too but I do do a lot of hillclimbs and it does come in handy then. Lately I've been jumping in and out of the canal, 4wd helps me get speed faster climbing out of the wet sides of the canal.
During the summer I work with mine, I irrigate every day and unfortuntely get into more mud than I like sometimes.

I've got a Honda 400ex and wouldn't trade it for anything. Might not be the quickest or fastest built today but I guarantee I'll keep up on a trail. The best part is I'll be riding it with no rebuilds in 10 years unlike any yamaha or polaris.
My dad has a Honda rancher for running around on the farm.

571lbs if it has 4x4. It's definantly Polaris heavy but handles great. Although I can't do the bigger jumps like some of my friends with lighter 2x4's, I'm not sore after a fair amount of riding. The weight makes it ride nice.

01-14-2006, 04:16 PM
Man my 400ex weighs in at a mere 375. But the scramblers are still pretty quick when it comes down to it. Besides I bet the 4X4 is a real handy in the mud and snow.
RJF's Red Cummins
01-17-2006, 12:09 AM
Eh, they hold their own I guess. The 500HO models like mine are just as fast as the big 700 twin Sportsmans and faster than anything smaller. It can't outrun the sporty 2x4's with decent motors though. However, a modded 400 2 stroke Scramber gets it the heck on!

You know, you are right. The KFX700 is designed as more of a cross country quad than an actual sport quad. In fact, Kawasaki is using the KFX700 in the GNCC circuit right now. Its not soing as well as the 450 class quads, but it holds its own.

I was never too impressed Polaris's quality, I always thought they were kind of slapped together. I use a 2001 sportsman 500 and an 04 ranger at work for plowing sidewalks and moving log splitters and an elevator around. They work well, but I think Honda's quality is second to none.
RJF's Red Cummins
01-18-2006, 08:12 PM
Well, I'm actually a bigger Polaris snowmobile diehard. Polaris has always been king in the mountains with the RMKs over the years.
I like our Polaris Sportsmans (and others for the same reason) because Polaris has seemed to designed them with the farmer and rancher like myself in mind. They are bigger, heavier, and stouter than all the other brands. Obviously heavy doesn't do anything for handling but it sure does a whole lot for pushing around hay bails by the front bumper and dragging sprayers around. Just like how Polaris has come out with the tracks for their Sportsman line, thats an agriculture aimed product from what I can see. We are thinking obout purchasing an SP800 with the tracks and setting it up for field spraying.waytogo
Then there is the Scrambler. I use my Scramadamadingdong every day during the summer months checking irrigation water. That meant I needed an automatic and definantly 4x4 because where there is water....there is mud.:doah: :D I like riding for recreation too and a small sport quad is best for that. Obviously that leaves the Scrambler and the Yamaha Wolverine, the Scrambler pretty much outranks the Wolverine in every category.
Another thing is the dealer, I have a great local Polaris dealer that has always taken care of me and that goes a LONG way with any brand.
As far as the Polaris reliability, I have found all three of ours to be very reliable. I don't think their quality is any less than Honda or Yamaha. Everything breaks down eventually....talk about being snapped together....my dad's new Grizzly quit running because something was missing in the carburetor!
The main thing, Polaris sleds rock!:pimp:

Ive got an 01' 500 HO scrambler I bought new then.. Since then Ive modded it to be fast as hell.. Basically I have Fox adjustable racing suspension, racing clutch, full 2.5 exhaust, 78mm jets, moddified air box, K&N filter, MX bars, Banshee nets, and some other odds and ends.. Its fast as hell and still can blast the raptors and other quads out of the water I also use it around the house for yard work and hauling the trailers around.. When I bought it I really wanted the 4x4 but instead I bought the 4x2 and they included a free winch, so depending on what Im doing, I made a quick disconect front ends to swap out the front with the winch to another bumper for race, I also have a plow that Ive attached to move dirt and stuff with it... Eventually I want to build a front mower attachment from a rider mover and motor and attach to the front and use the winch to raise and lower the deck

We've got a 98 Arctic Cat 454, real strong utility quad. Once pulled a Polaris 500 utility quad with broken tie rods up a 30% incline on a loose dirt hill. Also pulled our friend and his KFX700 up the biggest hill I had ever seen, it's much stronger than our friends vinson 500's.
Also have a 2000 Honda 400ex, most reliable bike we own, also an 04 Honda TRX450R, very very fast, my personal quad.

So far a plate 7 screws (3 have pulled out) , future surgery to either add another or replace the existing may happen:dunno: , if not atleast one more surgery to remove the plate if it heals the way it is. Not to mention the $23,000 in medical bills so far:eek: .
