ok..so my torque converter died today... got a 94 IDI 7.3 turbo with an auto... I was under the impression that it is a E4OD... my buddy, who is more of a Ford guy, says its not.... so, 3 questions:

1..... which trans should I have...? it's NOT a powerstroke...

2..... what would be the best converter to get for a stock mota' and towing....

3..... I read that a 2001 PSD converter will bolt in and would work great with the IDI.... is this true....?????

thanks for the help...

It is an E4OD.

I would probably just replace it with a new stock type converter. If you tow a lot, you may want to replace the pump and install a shift kit also. If the rest of the tranny is still in good shape.

The 7.3L IDI converter has 4 studs that attach it to the flexplate and the 7.3L DI has 6. I don't know if the DI flexplate will bolt up to an IDI or not. Getting a flexplate to bolt up to the IDI crank and the DI converter would be the only problem I could forsee.

Or you could call Suncoast or ATS and see what they offer for your truck.

1. The transmission will be an E40D.

2. Getting a lower stall torque convertor will transfer more HP to the rear tires and get better fuel economy, even on a stock truck.

3. Some convertors are 4 studs in the E40d unlike the 4R100 that are in the 01's, these are 6 bolt convertors. Anything is possible but run what is designed for your truck.

BD also offers an accumulator body to improve shift characteristics and reduce clutch wear, this and a torque convertor upgrade will keep temps down and do a great job of extending the transmissions life.
