The old Cummins used to be the loudest, but I've heard that the '05 PSD is now the king of loud for current trucks. Comments? Opinions? Personal experience?

My DMax sounds like a diesel but it is not loud:stir:

I guess I don't know what a "real diesel" sounds like, because to me any compression ignition engine that runs on diesel fuel seems to sound like a diesel to me, decibel level doesn't really seem to enter into the equation. I must be nuts.:D

Bah, the Dmax's and PSD's sound like big block gassers, the new cummins isn't hardly any better. The 2nd gen Cummins diesels, sound like diesels. :stir: :popcorn:

If you can't tell a difference between what a PSD and a Duramax and a Cummins sound like then you need your ears checked. They have a completely different sound to them. I'm not saying any is better but they have a completely different sound, especially the Fords, there more clattery.

GM is the quietest and I haven't paid attention to any 05 Super Duties so I can't compare to the Dodge. I am researching on TDR now about deleting the pilot injection :rolleyes: Ah screw it I'm just going to throw a 12 valve into a 96 chevy and be done with it.

You misunderstand... I can definately tell the difference between them, but regardless of the fact that they sound different, they still all sound like diesels. They sure as hell don't sound like big block gassers...

I think any V8 Diesel sounds like....well, a V8. Really no different out the tailpipe than any other V8, gas or otherwise.

You want a sweet sounding diesel take the old V12 detroits that was a sweet sounding diesel reved up.

I'll probally end up with a dura-smack in my next PU. I want a quiet diesel PU. :stir: :pimp:

THose old 2 strokes had a sound of their own that is way cool, but not as cool as the sound of a 12v/24v strait piped cummins. :stir:

Straight piped trucks are a ticket waiting to happen. All they do is piss some people off. Those pissed off people write their congress criters who write more laws against us. And those laws tend to sweep with a wide broom.

A 12.7 litre Detroit series 60 is loud strait piped. A little 5.9 Cummins is not all that loud strait piped.

If a straight piped Dodge CTD is so quiet why did Dodge spend all the extra money to put a muffler on them. If someone can hear it from 50 feet away with their windows closed and the radio on its to loud by current laws in your home state. Loud pipes are like any other CVC equipment violation, They give the police a reason to pull you over when ever they want to.

:rolleyes: THis is really stupid to be arguing about. YOu know why a muffler is used and a strait piped cummins isn't any louder than any other gas V8 with headers and a two chamber flowmaster that you hear on every corner. :rolleyes:

Well Bobby, I'm afraid I have to disagree with you again. I do think it's important and while it's no where near as bad as a straight piped gasser, the guys going out and straight piping Cummins, DMax or other diesels are causing problems. It's even been listed as an argument to help in pushing for legislation requiring "mandatory equipment inspections" of Diesels in your very own state of California (hear-say, but no reason do not believe it). This is just like the stuff required in the NE already because of too many people who irresponsibly disregard noise level comfort as well as safety of others. I've heard straight piped Cummins and DMax (don't recall a Ford, but not sure) and they most certainly were loud, particularly on launch and midrange acceleration the drone was so bad it was VERY annoying in the cab, what about those pore folks beside or behind you, or in a tunnel/overpass with you? Frankly, I would put it right up there with my neighbor's straight piped Harley, I absolutely despise it…

thank God i live in Tennessee. there are not any muffler laws where i register my truck. By the way the best sounding light duty diesel i've heard in a long time is a straight piped 1990 or so ctd dually this old man drives around town. i dont know what else he has done to it but it sounds so nice cruise through town a 40 mph
