i have got a 99 dodge ram 2500 quad cab short bed 4x4. i have a 95 gal aux. tank and chest style tool box combo. would it be ok to mount a gooseneck hitch directly over the axle or slightly behind? i am not talking towing a heavy fifth wheel trailer, but i figured it would be no worse than towing a tag trailer, right? does any company even make a hitch that will mount wherever? thanks

as far as I know they are all designed to mount directly over the axle or slightly in front of the axle. Weather or not you could move it whereever you want then i have no idea.

most of the ones i have seen/installed have a chart on the web-site for your make/model and bed length of where to mount them

I can't speak for the other brands on other trucks, but when I put my B&W on my '03 short bed F250, they offer two mounting positions. I don't remember exact dimensions but they were something like 3" and 6" ahead of the rear axle. I went with the 3" location to give the max clearance from the tool box & cab.
