View Full Version : Any stumbling with a 24v? Easy fix!

When I first bought my Dodge cummins I noticed a little bit of hesitation off idle a week or so after I bought it. Also, WOT seemed to not be as smooth as I thought it should be....It was a failing lift transfer pump. Mine was covered under warranty so I can't comment on the ease of replacing the pump but IIRC it is along the frame near the tank and only takes a few mins to replace. It has been good as new with a new pump, it's amazing what a little fuel pressure can do. :D

Just thought I'd throw that out there if anyone else is wondering why their 24v is stumbling sometimes. :)

Watch out because if you have a lift pump starting to go out like that you can kill the injection pump in a hurry and those are waaaaaaaay expensive!

My grandfathers 99 starts to stumble about every 20k miles or so, thats when he knows to replace the fuel filter...

Very good point, the VP44 injection pump is a $2k+ job if it's done by the dealer. IIRC, the lack of good fuel pressure causes the IP to run hot.

I was also told by the dodge serive tech that a new filter at 10K will also help the transfer pump live longer.

Jason,
I my knowledge on the 3rd gen trucks is a little shady. Do you guys have a transfer pump?

Yup, and a more reliable injection pump ;)

I change my fuel filter every other oil change or so.

If you wanna keep an eye on that lift pump get a fule pressure gauge. Isleep a lot better at night since i installed one.

Yup, I have the SRT10 pillar and fuel pressure gauge sitting in the garage, just waiting on a day to install... I plan on getting the FASS system within the next few months or so though.

I'd like to get the FASS system also, I hear it pretty much solves problems with the VP44 because it supplies it with more than enough cool fuel under almost any power setting.

i'd love to have a fass system but sonce i dont have 600 bucks laying around.... Everyone is always talking bad about the VP but i dont think its the vp personally. I think its the crappy lift pumps. IN my opinon the best thing about a fass system is the ability to eliminate the lift pump all together thus saving yourself from a 2000 dollar headache

hey i go as far as changing my fuel filter every other oil change.

hey Willy is that an in cab mounted fp gauge and if so and u dont mind me asking what is the price tag on one of those?

Yes it's an Autometer in cab gauge and it was around $150 if I remember right.

hey willy did it come with the isolator or did u have to get that seperate? also i noticed u r running the 4 inch magnaflow exhaust i was wondering if u were running a muffler or not and if not how does it sound:cool:

IN my opinon the best thing about a fass system is the ability to eliminate the lift pump all together thus saving yourself from a 2000 dollar headache I pretty much agree. I know the VP44 can't flow the fuel reliably that the P7100 can but it will flow plenty reliably for most "heavily" mombed 24v's when the VP is supplied with lots of cool fuel.

i am glad to have finally found a forum that does more than talk about lift pump or vp failure. i got sick of posting on other forums cause all they wanted to do was whine and complain about the crappy lift pumps. i wonder if its a very common problem or just the way people drive and take care of their rigs. i have 100k on mine and i have only had valves adjusted and a front main seal replaced and im by no means a conservative driver hehe. so what do u think do u think the lift and vp pumps are crap or do you think there is such things as taking care and preventative measures to lengthen the life of these expensive parts

What is the FASS system ?

I'll spend some time on TDR to find info but I would like to get info from here too. I have IP problems out the gazoo and do all the usual preventive measures but have not had much longevity out of any IP so far.
I will gladly squat the six bills if it will really work and is a proven product .
Please fill me in with some info and details.
Thanks , Tom

to the best of my understanding is that it is a very reliable fuel delivery setup. FASS stands for fuel air separating system. The set up consists of a pump that is mounted close to the fuel tank. The pump also carrys 2 filters. with tis set up you can eliminate the stock lift pump all together and to the best of my understanding you can eliminate the stock fuel filter as well. They are claiming this system will give a little beter fuel economy because you are injecting more fuel with less air in it therefore getting cleaner burns. Most guys that use this set up are seeing a constant 14-15 psi on the fuel pressure gauge even at wide open throttle. One guy even reported seeing 17 psi. Another alternative is the RASP system. Basically this is a mechanical fuel pump that is run by the motor through an aditional pulley. The only real downside to this set up in my opinion would be fuel consumption. The way i understand this pump is that the faster you go the fast it goes so its gonna be pumping a lot of fuel is you find out other wise let me know so im not telling people wrong.

Wasn't everyone contacted by Cummins about the recall?

???????? Tell us more ???????

I don't think there was ever a recall on anything, especially the injection pump. IIRC what they did was extended every truck's warranty to 100K for the weak lift pump they used.

Great info - any other knowledge on the RASP system ? I like the thought of the mechanical pump driven by the crank but I am concerned about how it keeps its prime when the motor is off . For example I use the lift pump to help fill the filter resivour when I PM the truck .
The reason I ask this is because my truck is in the shop getting Injecter Pump number three and I am getting close to the end of the warranty period so I want to do all I can to help this IP to last as long as it can.
Thanks in advance , Tom

I just don't get your truck man! Three VP44's is unreal! In just 60 something K! Something else has GOT to be wrong there....

I wish I knew what it is/was because I am tired of playing by all the rules and still having all the problems.

Well , my truck is back to normal now that its got another new IP and LP - it feels good to have power once agian. No more stumbles , dead spots in the throttle, and lack of power at all RPM's - just strong excelleration as it should be......I hope it last this time......
