i have a 08' f450 with 4.88 gears that is rated @ 33,000#s maximum loaded trailer weight. so my questions are, do i register the truck @ 33000 or do i have to add the gvwr of the truck which is 14,500.

next ? does maximum loaded trailer weight include curb weight or is it the gvwr of the trailer.

the reason for these questions is that i was trying to stay under the 26000 gvwr since i only have a class B cdl. then i had my dot audit and was told by the trooper that i needed to upgrade to class A cdl because my truck is rated @ 14500 and my trailer is rated @ 14000 which is a total of 28500. i thought it went by curb weight. thought wrong. so im in the process of upgrading my cdl but now have to re-register the truck.
any help would be much appreciated.

what state are you trying to register in?

that would be the fine state of new jersey.

the fine state of New Jersey Trooper told you correct. you will need to register for what the max capability of truck and trailer are. also it helps if you need to fudge your load weight above your personal prefferance for a customer. My 01 freightliner max weight was 80K, even though I would only pull a 13k load from NJ, that state wouldn't let me register any less than 80K.

so duckman , your saying i should register the gvwr of the truck which is 14,500 and lets just say the trailer is 20,000 gvwr that would be 34,500. so that means i can register at almost any weight, but can still only haul only up to 33,000 total. please tell me if im correct and thanks for all your help.

the registration must equal or exceed the vehicle.

Register high...like 40-45k if you can. Not that you will ever haul that much weight but it gives you plenty of cushion should you ever upgrade to a 24k trailer.

brisk, im wondering if there is any meaning behind the if you can statement. is it that it cost a lot more to register at 40,000 then 33,000 ? and no matter what its rated for, i can only haul up to 33,000 which is curb weight of truck, trailer, load, ect. correct?

im sure this is what duckman and yourself have been telling me. its just hard for me to compute, but i want to thank you guys for all your help.
