I want to fit some taller tires without going to wheel spacers.
Right now I run 265/70/17's and they work great, and they are LR-E rated.
the 285's are LR-D but have the same poundage ratings as the 265's.
I don't want to deal with wheel spacers, so I just need to know if they will fit, and on the stock wheels.

if you go with BFG 285-70-17 they will work....i would get the tires in load range E, bfg should have them...

Hmm, so you are saying that not just any 285's will work, only BFG? I was going to go with Hankook MT RT03's

an E rate with the same rating will "squish" more on the side walls. 285's will fit, but they will be tight. load up a D rate tire and let it compress now you are adding side will rubbing. bad juju.
E rates would be best, but if I were to go to a 285 then i would get 1/4 spacers just for the added comfort. you will almost always have to run them at max PSI with just about any load to be sure they dont rub.

The Hankook MR RT03's are E rated but they do have some good sidewall lugs that may stick out more than most other "truck" tires.
I was also concerned with the 285's being too wide for the stock wheels.

they might be. i've seen a dodge dually locally that had 37's mounted on his stock rims & a few other dually's with 35's.
