So whats the "low down on what cases came behind what trans?

I thought that the 241HD came behind the auto trucks and the monster 271 came behind manual trucks. Is this correct?

I know my '01 auto has a 241HD, I read the tag. :doah:

I've got a 271XHD and it's probably 6" wider than my 4401 in my chevy :eek:

My 94 is a 5 speed and the 95 was an auto and they both had the 241DLD. I know you are talking about later trucksbut thats my $.02 :D .

1989 to 1993 had 205's reguardless of tranny
1994 to 2002 had 241's only - the ones with a P.T.O provision are the H.D models and there were many changes throughout the years and the later model the better as far as the 241HD models go. The HD cases could be had behind either manual or auto trannys but the standard shift stuff had the HUGE 29 spline input.
starting in 2003 Diamler started using the 271's and 273's behind auto's and manuals.

Well, I've got a 241DLD. I'm guessing LD stands for light duty, darn..... :doah: So this is exactly the same case in my K5 blazer? How big of a strength difference is there between the LD and HD models? I've heard the 241 is fairly strong anyways, anyone on CK5 knows I'm one to preach about their strength, but we are talking a 7Klbs truck with monster power this time.....I'm a little less confident with one under my Dodge than my K5. :doah:

IMHO the 241 is a great case and fairly strong . The HD versions have an extra bearing on the main shaft ( I think it is for thrust with PTO useage ) and the later ones have a rear output shaft that is the same as the 271's along with the back half of the case is made of a stronger material. I have heard that the HD versions also have a wider chain and sprockets but I have not checked this out for myself yet so I do not know if it is true.

As far as strength of the HD cases all I can say is that I am real damn impressed with mine. After hurricane Ivan I was asked to clear out and uproot some enormous oak tree stumps and the only way I could get enough traction was to lock it in 4WD on asphalt and let the motor do what it does best. The 241HD held up just fine while all four tires were slipping on the pavement and gaining traction causing some strong shock loading and front end bouncing. To be honest I really thought the front end would fail way before the 241 would but they both did just fine.
I can't imagine more stress being put on the transfercase that day with out it being pure abuse and it held up like it was gear driven cast iron 205.

The HD versions all have a PTO provision and say "HD" on the medalion(sp) on the back side of the case.
There are many varients of the 241 but the heavy duty models are specific .

I'm with the guy who said HD is a HD ..... :rolleyes:

The Dodge version of the 241 might be stouter than what was offered in the past but the Dodge HD version is different than the DLD !

I suck at the computer stuff so I do not know how to post a pic of the 241HD in my truck but if anyone would like to compare externally just crawl underneath a 1994~2002 3500 dually Dodge 4x4 - they came standard in those and were optional in the 2500's or came as standard equipment if a Snow Plow Package was spec'd.

Correct me if I'm wrong but if the DLD was the HD version it too would have a PTO cover, it does not.

I can't explain the DLD but it sounds like the HD case to me. The PTO port is the way to tell but they do offer a non PTO 241 case ( just like RJF's ) behind the diesels and those cases are not HD's.
I don't think it is a matter of who's is right/wrong - just all of us figuring out what was offered and waht the differences are.

RJF, just remember 241 with a PTO port equals HD reguardless of what designation is on the round tab and a 241 with no port is not an HD.

I don't mean to be pointing fingers and saying anyone is completely wrong, I'm just trying to get to the bottom of this. So where EXACTly is the PTO output? I looked my DLD over fairly well and saw nothing that looked like a PTO output. It looks fairly identical to the 241 under my K5. :confused:

The PTO port is on the passenger side of the case inline with the mainshaft and at the bulk of the transfercase main body. The helical gear for the PTO is near, or after , the section that houses the planetary gears; and if my memeory is working good today the port is on the back half of the case where it splits.
It will be very obvious if you are underneath the truck, looking at the case from the rear passenger side, if it has a port or not.

There is nothing wrong with a standard 241 behind a heavy truck with lots of torque - there is just a stouter version of that case made for certain applications and they all have a PTO port.

RJF. Being that your truck is 6.5 years newer than my newest truck, Dodge might have had some changes with their Tcases but both of mine 94-95 are 241DLD's and are and were in 3500's and both have PTO covers.

Well no PTO cover on mine. Oh well.... I'm sure it will be fine too but would have been nice to have the HD version.

Either you have a million and one odds and got two trucks with incorrect tcase badging or NP decided to change their names sometime during Dodge's production because it seems that later trucks with the DLD code are light duty cases. I guess. :dunno:

My Uncle has a 99 like yours and I'm gonna check out his Tcase and the badge on it for model codes. I ddoubt I got two mis-badge Tcases but knowing my luck................. :doah: Nah!

Ya'll got me thinking and I just went out and checked mine just to make sure I was not loosing my mind and my 2002 ( built 12-05-01 ) has "DHD" on the tab.
I seem to remember learning on TDR back in 2001 that the early years did not specify an HD case when equiped with a PTO provision but that in later years when more upgrades and changes occured ( like the output shaft size ) the HD designation was made. In my opinion any case with a PTO provision is considered an HD case no matter what the lettering on the tab.

Oh , I was wrong about the PTO port being on the back half of the case - it is on the front half.


DWITCHER - please post up about your Uncles 99 , I am currious to know when they started using the DHD lettering ???
