I need your input on a choice. I’m looking at a 05 d-max ext. cab short bed and also a 01 dodge Cummins 2500 ext. cab short bed. I have heard that dodge has some major tranny problems. Is this true. Which one would you pick?

What do you plan to do with the tow rig? Commerical towing, off roading?

Chevy: I like the allison trans and the dmax motor has a relaible rep, but won't last as long as the cummins in the very looong run. If you offroad any, the truck sits too long for my tastes.

Dodge: I like verything about my dodge except the stock trans. If the truck has low miles, you can put in an updated valve body and torque converter and make it last for a good while. Or go all out and drop roughly $3500 on custom built trans that will put a big ol :D on your face, like I did. You can do a mild rebuilt with decent parts for around $2500.

Either truck, atleast put gauges in. Even if you plan to keep it stock!

In a situation like yours just get the pickup you feel the most comfortable in. Drive it, Feel it, Buy it. Make it simple because any of the big three will do just find in the environment you will use it in. Get what you want.

Most likely, you'll find the Chevy to be a nicer, better riding and handling truck. After all, it's 4 years newer, which has a bigger effect than which brand it is IMHO.

The Dodge IMHO is going to be the thougher vehicle of the two. I farm also, and our Dodges have held up well in our year around farming environment.

If your looking to just buy the truck and drive it. putting very little money in it, go for a dodge with a manual trans. My wife can't drive a standard and I have a bad knee. So I invested the $$ in auto.

i found an 06 powerstroke. are there any known problems with this year. I have a buddy that has an 04 and he has cracked the head, and it is always in the shop.

The later 05 up 6.0 have fewer problems, My 05 has almost 40K and only had one problem that was corrected, however I was on the road and had to rent a car to get home and come back and get it.

I would suggest the Cummins or Duramax though.
