We made a smoker/grill out of an old propane tank with the goal of being able to attach to a hitch receiver somewhat like a cargo carrier. We used 3/8" wall 2" square stock for the base and mounted the tank on top. Assuming all welds are solid, will I have an issue with the integrity of the receiver assembly. I have a 2012 ford expedition el. Factory hitch receiver assembly. Weight of smoker/grill=460lbs. Max Tongue weight per specs is 500lbs.

I plan to drive highway miles a couple times a year. We already gave it a test run and it seemed to sway too much. We then shimmed it a little to reduce swaying. We are satisfied with results. We will chain it, of course, but I don't really want to put anyone's safety at risk.

I really appreciate any feedback that is offered. Thank you.
    Bill

I would think you would be fine... with that being said if I was behind you I would probably change lanes. :D

Yes it would be fine. And I agree with you, safety first to avoid inconvenience or any problem along the way. Good luck!
