I did some searching around and couldn't find anything on this, forgive me if it's here somewhere I've got a 63 Galaxie that I'm going to be restoring. During the resto (and after) I'm going to need a trailer to tow it around with. Has anybody dealt with towing a mid 60s full size sedan like this? I guess start from the beginning, what will I need, what to look for, and what to stay away from. I'm looking for an open trailer as opposed to enclosed. I just can't justify the added cost. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Dan
for that perticular car you dont need anything fancy unless you "slam" it or really lower the ride height. my suggestion would be the standard (2) 3500lb axles, minimum 16 foot deck, low deck height (as opposed to a deckover trailer), and minimum 4 foot ramps. this being the average "car trailer" you shouldnt have problem finding one, new or used.
Yep, what he said. Check out PJ Trailers. Ive used one of their car trailers a couple times. Pulls pretty nice, and reasonably priced too.
I might go longer than that, remember he is gonna be towing a friggin Ford Galaxie, you guys know how long those things are....
i know how long it is 18' hauler with last 3' dovetailed and 4' long slide out ramps make sure you have brakes 56 lincoln
Thank you everyone for your helpful responses. Derek, very nice setup you have there. Where were you able to find a 3 ft dovetail? Most of the trailers I've seen have only had a 2 foot. I was worried about the breakover angle and bottoming out with such a short dovetail. You seem to have taken care of that little problem. Also scraping the rear quarters may be an issue for me also. Not being able to "test and tune" before I buy something leaves many questions. Thanks again to all for any insight. Dan
i know the trailer was bought in belchertown, MA at http://www.orchardhillsales.com/ and it is an imperial trailer that trailer isnt mine, i was hauling it for a friend i can check those measurements today when i get home from work, as i store that trailer in my yard
If you are concerned with the brakeover angle you could do this: Get 2 ball mounts...one that will put the trailer level and one that will lift the front of the trailer up alot ( maybe like a 6in drop and another that is a 1in rise). that will drop the back of the trailer quite a ways down and make it easier to load and unload the car.
