I did alot of research before I bought my Volant ram air intake. Here's what i learned: 1) My chevy dealer said they have no problem with a aftermaket intake except for the k&n. It does not filter well enough and they have had several pitted turbo impellers from them. 2) a mostly stock motor cannot use the amount of air that a stock filter can flow so you get no performance out of the aftermarket intake. 3) buy your filter based on filtering ability not airflow. I went with the volant because it filters well for all the dirt roads I drive. The stock filter cost $65. The volant cost about $450. I drive 45,000 miles a year. As often as I had to replace the stock filter it was cheaper in the long run to run a cleanable filter. I saw zero diffrence in power or economy confirming #2 above. My Banks exhaust made a noticable diffrence in EGT's but not a noticable diffrence in power. It does sound better. The AFE,AEM and the SB filters look good but wheren't available when I bought mine.

I agree, filtering is more important than air flow, and thats a big reason I like the AMSOIL EAA Nanofiber filters, although a lot of the aftermarket companies are doing great things with filters now too.

I went with the AFE stage 2 on my 07 CTD. I haul about 10k but with alot of wind resistance (8'6" wide, 11'6" tall, flat front) I really didn't see any difference in economy, but the difference in torque down low was very noticable. in the wind and hills here in WY, I can pull in 5th when with the stock airbox, I was into 4th or 3rd. I will be upgrading to the pro flo filter, or the new AFE dry element soon.

What size PVC pipe? You don't want to reduce your air inlet from stock. Deisels usually come with a good factory inlet box, but poor filters. I've seen great results from both Donaldson & Amsoil. Adding a cold air duct from the front of your vehicle is a good way to get a cooler intake charge but be careful in the rain:)

they probably used tha black abs 2-4" plumbing pipe. but the S&B kit has a fully sealed box i think and it pulls from the fender still but with a higher flow filter.

I tried the ridgid PVC to make a Cold Air Intake but it was to ridgid and put pressure on the inter cooler tube. So I went with a 4 inch flex hose instead.

The flex hose works well the EGTs are low and it does not pull the filter minder down like it did with a stock air filter. So far have not had any problmes with water or snow being drawn into the filter.

The flex hose is called Dura Flex a member of TDR sent it to me from OK.

will be pulling the trailer from SE PA to Chicago and then to CO and WY and will see how that and everything else works with a load on it.

    Warranty Issues w/ K & N

Have heard that there can be warranty issues with some of these filters, especially K&N, where grit gets by the the filter and scours the turbo vanes. Has anyone experienced this?

I installed the "cool air hose", and the "cold air intake" from psmbuick.com. It really made a difference on my egt's, and I was able to keep my stock air box and filter out of an abundance of caution for warrenty issues, and keeping the air coming in as clean as possible.
On my last towing trip (9k+ 5er), I had a hard time getting the egt's much over 1200 degrees. That's with 6 to 7% grades-floored, 90 degrees outside, and the A/C running. Prior to these mods, I had to keep backing out just to keep the egt's under 1425.
Another factor I think played a part was the TST box with it's injection timing advance.

    Cold air intake

For the 94-07.5 Dodges we like the PSM Cool Power intake that re-uses the sealed factory airbox. It's cheap and very effective. Then take your pick of filters, stock, Amsoil EaA189, AFE Progaurd-7 Super Stock etc. See the last issue of the TDR magazine for more info. For the 99-03 Fords the AIS Severe Duty with our fender sleeve mod is a good option. We are also working on some DMax kits but nothing yet. More info on the website.
