The Cummins B-series is a toy. The Dodge chassis is a huge disappointment, to me it's not a real truck chassis. It's weak and has a lot of areas for failure, too many welds. Putting real world "all day" torque and hauling maximum weight with this type of chassis is ingredients for failure.
Sure, the Dodge is a light-duty truck. So the B-series Cummins is in a good place, but giving the chance to buy a "reworked" Caterpiller in it's place and I'll be the first in line.

The B series Cummins would be a toy in an OTR rig. In a pickup it's huge, thats why there is no bigger engine available than it, it's the biggest baddest engine available in a pickup.

There are thousands apon thousands of hotshotter, ranchers, farmers, and construction guys that would completely disagree that the chassis is not up to par for what it's supposed to be rated for.

Even if there was a pickup-ized C7 available, it woud still be in the same chassis, as it's in the same class as a B series.

Like it or not, but the C7 is NOT in a higher class engine wise than the B series. Engines anywhere from the 6 to 8.3L engine size are medium duty engines that have basically the same life span, similar power output, and rated for roughly the same GVWR. I will however agree that the B series is on the small size for it's class, and that the C7 is in the middle...but they are without a doubt in the same engine class.

If Toyota ever comes out with an HD pickup and it happens to have a pickup-ized C7 in it, let us know how it works out for you.

Oh, I almost forgot....what actuall chassis problems have you had with your Dodge that could use improvement (getting onto another subject at hand, as the B series vs. C7 would see identical chassis regardless)?

I never stated I'd buy a Toyota, reguardless of the powertrain.
Put a Cat in a Ford (F-350) and they might have a customer. I've owned 3 Ford diesels in the past and had no problems, 7.3's that is.
As for an answer on the Dodge chassis, no I havn't had a problem but a boxed frame on a pickup is not my first choice in truck frames. C-channel is the only way to go IMO.

Here are the specs for the C7 Acert which is comparable to the 5.9/6.7 Cummins. I understand that the C7 can be made to put out 330hp/1000ftlbs. The 5.9 Cummins can safely make 500hp/1100-1200ftlbs. Ford offers both the Cat and the Cummins in its F650.

    Which would you choose?

    C7 7.2L Diesel Engine Reliability
Dealer Repair Frequency statistics show Cat engines with ACERT Technology are the most reliable Caterpillar has ever produced. Durability
Laboratory tests and engine disassembly analyses indicate that the Cat C7 engine has a B50 life of 450,000 to 500,000 miles. Fuel Economy
The 2007 Cat C7 engine is expected to provide a fuel economy improvement of up to 4% Total Owning/Operating Costs
The 2007 Cat C7 engine is engineered to offer the same reliability, improved durability, improved fuel economy and similar maintenance costs as the 2004 C7 engines for outstanding overall value. Dealer Support
Cat sets the industry standard for support with 2,500 authorized North American service locations and a 24/7 call center. [IMG]

    Specifications

    Cylinders In-Line 6 Bore/Stroke 4.33 x 5.00 (110mm x 127mm) Displacement 7.2 L (441 cu in) Weight 1425 lb (647 kg) Horsepower 190 to 300 @ 2500/2400 rpm Torque 520-860 lb-ft @ 1440 rpm

It's a good engine in medium duty specs and settings, but you have to remember those numbers will be significantly different in a pickup.

I would have to choose the motor that could make the most power and do it reliably, and that has to be the Cummins. I have seen a 2500 with 800+hp/1600ftlbs(Greg Hogue's truck built here in Mansfield, Tx. at RayMac Engines). Now I don't think you need that much, even in an F650, but it can be done.

when Toyota comes out with a Diesel engine it will most likley have a Hino engine in it. They have a long relationship and have supplied transmissions and diff's for years. Check out this website www.hino.com "A Toyota Company"

exactly!!!! I've said this before on this forum Toyota has NO reason to outsource a diesel it's totally cabable of building there own high quality diesel.

and the specs above about dealer service with Cat is printed directly of there website

Who here has had REAL world dealings with Caterpillar and there service and parts department?????????
reading the sales propaganda off there website doesn't make it so in real life

Caterpillar produces excellent products. but parts are expensive and so is any service done at a Cat dealer. expect to pay 20-30 percent more for parts and services.also Cat is notorious for voiding warranties for the smallest infractions. If they can find away to deny a claim they WILL.

I've worked in,on or around Diesels for over 14 years (although I'm not an "expert" by any means) I have had the pleasure (or displeasure) of working on a vast cross section of the Diesel world . And I can honestly say that all the major companies produce a good product with only Minor gripes to each manufacture

In closing ,careful what you wish for A Cat engine sounds cool but it won't be the "best thing ever"
