Can you the technical public tell me your opinions about when it is appropriate to turn th OD off button "off" when pulling say 11K. I think as long as my engine RPMs are about 2000-21 I'm Ok. Am I doing right? Question specific to 2000 Ram 3500 dually diesel blah blah blah
i think you should be allright as long as you dont redline too much but sometime just cant help it when pulling heavy loads. i am sure someone else here at TOW RIG will be able to answer that question for you....
Better to have the OD on, then the converter is locked up and the trans is running cool. Sounds like your ok to me. waytogo
thanks for the responses.....My newer truck does it all for me but this one is for pulling some of the equipment and I was not sure. My last truck of about the same year was a manual. Thanks again I'm new so I will have some picks of my 600 hp 05 soon...... Mattwaytogo
Running with OD locked out is fine, and leaves you in the 1:1 3rd gear which reduces stress in the transmission. Keeping your RPMs up around 2,000 is good. The Cummins engine is designed to spin at redline all day and be just fine. You won't hurt that engine running 2900 all day long if you had to. -Chuck
I click my OD off only when I'm pulling a heavy load up a mountain and the tranny has a hard deciding whether it wants to be in OD or 3rd. Then I click it off lose 5-10mph pulling the grade but save the tranny.
