I'm looking at buying a 2000 Ford F250 7.3 auto with 220,000 miles. The truck is well taken car of but I'm pretty sure that the tranny has never had rebuild. I know he changes the fluid and filters religeously and he is the second owner of the truck. If I buy this truck should I be afraid to throw on a Dp tuner? Also the 4r100 has no issues and my friend has towed 10k pounds with the truck but what do you guys suggest with making the tranny survive. I've read to put a bigger tranny cooler on it but what else?! Thanks in advance!
Well, with that kind of mileage, a rebuild is more than due if its the original. If not, we need to know the mileage on the rebuild. Basic upgrades are a tugger kit (VB upgrades) and a bigger cooler and a trans pan. From there you go to better clutches, better converter, and other cool stuff, like the dual load center bearing. The 4R100 is a good tranny properly built and is not nearly as expensive to build as the Dodge autos. AS for chipping it, I would address the transmission first, then consider the chip.
Hey thanks for the help! Maybe I'll see if my buddy will give me a 12month warranty on the tranny. I told him that is the only thing keeping me from buying his truck, even know it shifts great now who's to say it will in 3 months. That would be my luck! He needs to get rid of it and only wants $10,500 so maybe I'll see if he'll cover half the cost if the tranny goes within a year, if it stays alive I'll save for a new tranny and get one in a year. Who do you guys suggest for a kickass 4r100?
Have a trany flush done on the truck, most places have the dip stick tube option so they dont have to undo any tranny lines. Get some good transfluid to be put back in and let it rip.
