I'm buying a tow rig spring or summer. I'm planning on getting a Dodge (Cummins, 2wd, Dually) but the wife wants me to get one with an automatic transmissiom so she can drive it too. I've heard that Dodge was having problems with their automatics behind their diesels. Did they fix this problem in the 2005 and 2006's?

I'm planning on putting a cab over camper and towing about 8000lbs. Will a 3/4 ton or 1 ton single rear wheel be enough to handle this load? If the Dodge automatic is still having problems, I'll probably end up getting a Chevy with a Duromax. I've heard the Allison automatic is unstoppable.

The 48RE is a fine transmission. One should last under normal operating conditions under stock power for quite a while. Dodge has had some problems in the past, but some of it has just been blown out of porportion.

I got 119K out of my 47RE in my '01.

Take good care of it and it should give you problem free use for quite a while.
