I currently tow a tag. Wife and I have been looking at buying an additional 5th wheel to do some rv'ing. I have been looking at hitches and there are a few that I really like. The question I have is since I have a short bed, do I need a slider hitch so it can move back when parking. There are a lot of guys that have short beds that don't have these type of hitches. There appears to be an advantage of being able to make a tighter turn, but its something I really don't know if its really necessary. If not I'm leaning towards the Turnover ball with a 5th wheel hitch. All opinions welcome .
I've heard that the fifth wheel to gooseneck ball conversions aren't all that safe, but that's second hand. I would invest in a slider. I personally have the Pullrite Superglide, which is automatic, so you never have to worry about it, it slides on it's own. It's pricey, but so is smashing your cab because you thought you could make that turn... Marc
Mark, thanks for the reply. I have been towing my tag carhauler around to shows and haven't been back for a few weeks long enough to reply. While in Yuma, I looked at some more sliders on 5ers and will go that way, like you suggest. The brand remains to be decided. I'm going to look at all the manufactures I can before I finally lay down money. I agree that the price of a hitch is nothing when compaired to damaged cab waytogo .
mmm, Yuma... i LOVE yuma and am going this weekend. anywho, i pull a goose with no overhead hang so i dont need a slide. i do know that if i had a 5er i would be buying a slide hitch. i agree that the adaptors from 5er to goose are a bad idea. if i could find a camper style factory made goose neck i would be a happy man. i have not looked into any of the slide hitches to give advice though. just that i would want one, and a nice set of air bags, but i have those already.
I went with the slider on my short bed. I've parked without moving the hitch back, but you must be careful not to hit the cab. With the hitch pushed back, I have the clearance to jack knife the rig if I needed too, but haven't had the need. The extra clearance makes all the difference. I went with Husky, but only because that is what the rv dealer sold. By dumb luck, the husky sits a little lower than some I've seen, but the height is adjustable, so that doesn't mean a thing. Additionally, the whole unit can be removed from the bed with very little effort and leaves two rails in the bed. Maybe an inch high. Hope that helps
the adapter from B&W (turnoverball) is on the truck side and gives you a 5th wheel hitch. It works great and doesn't provide the week spot that the trailerside adapters do. truck side: http://www.turnoverball.com/companion/index.htm vs trailer side: http://www.popuphitch.com/rv1.htm The shortbed thing brings in another that B&W doesn't have a solution for. I can't help with that one.
Thanks for the info everyone. I did ask the guys at B&W about the slide and they already told me they didn't have anything like that. I've been looking at some slides, but haven't looked at a Husky. I'll try and look at as many as possible and maybe ask some more questions. I've only been home a day or so at a time so haven't been able to go to the dealers to really look at. Again thanks.
