I'm thinking about getting a new truck. The wife is wanting me to go fullsize, (have a Tacoma now.) So, I thought, Why not go all out and get a diesel? So, here I am, lurking around, looking for info before I buy.
Welcome Marky, I bought a brand new Toyota truck back in 1988, it was fine for what it was, didn't tow anything when I had it, but different story now, you will love a diesel.
Welcome to the gathering! I am glad to see you are considering a diesel. Just to help you along your path let me mention one big thing - diesel trucks tend to hold a lot more value in the used market than gas rigs. Something to think about when looking at the sticker price. Its worth every penny.
Couple questions: 1. mileage, Am I right in thinking a Diesel will get better mileage than a gas engine in the same truck? About 17 to 24 MPG for most? 2. miles, Is 100,000 miles on a 2003 truck too much?
Depends on how its been driven and maintained. Look it over real careful. As for mileage, that is always going to be a hot topic. Some people aren't realistic with their mileage and some are. In the real world, a 2500 4x4 Auto 3.73 gears will get between 12-18 mpg. Sometimes there are extremes, but that about covers the majority of it. Yes they do get quite a bit better mileage than gas rigs of simmilar size/wieght, as well as last longer. I find that if you drive it nice in town you will avg about 14-15mpg and on the freeway if you run 65-70 you can squeek 18+. It all depends on your driving habits and also on mods you make to the truck. Lift? Costs about 2mpg. TST or Edge Juice? Adds about 1 mpg (ish) if you drive it the same way. Basically, your right foot controls fuel mileage. I can run through town adn only get like 10mpg (but there is a pissed off honda somewhere in all that smoke!!) or I can cruise down the freeway @70mph and get about 18-20. There you go.
OK, Here is my thinking at this point. My needs are a daily driver with occasional towing. I see a travel trailer in my future. Maybe not a boat with gas @ $3.00. So, my research tells me that GM is the best ride and daily driver. Therefore I will be shopping for a Chevy or GMC with a Duramax.waytogo
2500HD (RPO LBZ) First impressions! I drove the Ford F250 PowerStroke, Ram 2500 CTD and the Chevy 2500HD w/DMax/Allison. At first impression, all have good points and bad points. For all out pulling - DMax looked better on paper. If you are looking for used DMax vehicles then be sure to read (http://www.thedieselpage.com/duramax/2006enginenewsrelease.htm) this article about the changes that have been made to the LBZ model DMax for 2006 compared to the LLY and earlier models of the DMax. Another question to ask is "What is the MB diesel in the Ram going the look like in the coming year or two"? Ford will be there but with the 07 EPA rule change and the ULSF requirements coming on board by June 30, 2006, 07 diesel pickups will have some new adjustments to make. JMHO Bill
