My local Napa couldn't come up with a gasket for the diff cover for a Dana 80 axle. They said Victor Reinz didn't make one and that the dealerships just use "the right stuff" silicone to seal the covers.

Anyone have a similar problem with their D80? I know Ford used them too.

I don't use gaskets on things like axles, I just use whatever kind of selant I have around. I know they are starting to do it that way in the factory in some things. If I remimber "the right stuff" is a bit more expensive than other brands and I've never had any leak so I wouldn't spend the extra money.

    .
I agree about using just a sealant in place of a gasket. I have even used it as a valve cover gasket on a 429ci intercepter engine that I had years ago.
I don't want to stael the thread but I see you have a Mack B61 listed in your signature. I helped restore one of those about 20 years back. It had a Quadruplex trans in it instead of the 10 spd. Very nice trucks when they are done up right.

Just use black RTV and spread a thin layer on both surfaces..let it cure for 10min and then slap on the cover and tighten in a cross pattern like you do with lugnuts.waytogo

Hmm, I have always had back luck trying to make silicone gaskets I guess. I've done valve covers and diff covers, all of which seeped on me. I got some of that fancy "the right stuff" that is supposed to be even better. I guess I'll try out the liquid gasket idea again...:D

I've used blue, ultra blue, black, and ultra copper with good results.

    RJF,

My '95 has the Dana 80 and it came from the factory with sealant, not a gasket.
