sad day for me haha... anyways il give you all a description of what is going on w/ the truck. so i was driving down the freeway next to my buddy and as i went over an overpass and came back down from the bump, my truck started shaking real bad... it felt like i was going over a washboard dirt track or something. AND it didnt stop! it just kept on bouncing for nearly 5 seconds (until i slowed way down and got it back under control). now here's the really bad part... my buddy said he saw my wheels shaking side to side (not the truck bouncing up and down) has anyone had this problem?... should have gotten a chevy haha:doah:
sounds like a bad steering damper. Just unbolt one end of it, and see if it pumps freely, or with alot of resistance. If it pumps free then it's bad. The front end feels like it is falling off when they go bad.
Sounds like the dreaded "Death Wobble"... Check for things like low front tire air pressure, worn front end parts (ball joints, trackbar thing, etc), and other such things. Does it have E rated tires on it, a leveling kit or anything like that, as some people seem to indicate that can help trigger it...
i do have a revtek leveling kit on the thing... and that makes sense i think it is the death wobble thing. i took it to the dealer and told them to check everything they're gonna call me back tomorrow. also, how many psi are the front tires supposed to be at? mine are at like 45-50ish.
If they are 80psi E rated tires you should be up around 60psi at least if you aren't towing a goose, which I know you aren't. Maybe a little higher if you are striving for mileage. I run mine at 65psi. I'd check your whole steering system, and air up those tires!
check the drivers door for the tire pressure info. Also there is info about what pressures to run at what loads included with the owners manual packet if you still have it.
Door sticker says front 60 psi, both loaded and unloaded. Rear is 45 psi empty and 70 psi loaded. Do you have the stock tires and rims? What brand and type are the tires? Mine came with the BFG Rugged Trail 265/70 tires. I run them all at 60 psi, so far no problems.
Thats the Death Wobble. happened to me with my 03. Bolt for the track bar broke off on a bumpy road, got the ride of my life. Thought for sure I was going to lose the whole load of hay. Had to drive it back to town at 10mph cause any faster and it would happen again. Dealer replaced bolt, never haappened again. Check everything under the truck for wear, and even have someone run the steering back and forth while you look under there for play in anything. Your axle was bouncing side to side and your tires were doing it in the opposite direction.
yeah so it was at the dealer today for its oil change and i had them check everything out in the front end to make sure everything was ok. they had a few of the techs test drive it and none of them found any problems and everything looked perfect in the suspension and steering... drove the thing home and had no problems. i still have the stock rims and tires on it (michalen 265.70.17) so il bet they were just a bit underinflated. thanks for all the help guys i appreciate it... if anything else happens il let you know.waytogo
It is a notorious problem with these trucks and leveling kits. As soon as people thrown on the cheap spacer style leveling kits, 90% of trucks get bad death wobble. Search TDR, it's all over the place. Aftermarket link arms that are adjustable usually cure the problem, when you raise it 2" the castor geometry is changed and you can't adjust it back.
My stock 05 4x4 sits more or less level. I assume it is due to the snow plow prep option. Does that mean it has different alignment settings or special control arm eccentrics compared to a 4x4 without the snow plow prep?
I had the same thing happen to me coming down a pass at 70 MPH over some bumpy turns. I pulled over fully expecting a flat tire it felt so shaky but both tires were fine. I was running 60 psi on 235/85/16's now I run 65 psi and put new shocks on and the problem hasn't come back. It felt like once the shocks were compressed and couldn't come up for air it was all riding on the springs.
hmm wish i would have known that befor i bought the dang thing haha... well it feels a bit better now that the tires are aired back up but how much do those link arms run for and where would i get them... can i install them myself?
If you have a leveling kit on your truck your caster is now wrong.I called KORE when this happened to me and they said to set my caster cam bolts to the 12 o'clock position. It fixed mine .Hope this helps.
where are the cam bolts?... im not incredibly mechanical could you maybe take a picture to show me where they are? if not i'l just call kore haha.
They are eccentric washers on the lower control arm bolts, where the lower control arms bolt to the axle. My truck (with the snow plow springs) has the bolt on the bottom and the line on the eccentric pointing to 12 oclock. Is that what you mean AZcowboy? Just curious, where does the factory set them on a truck without the snow plow springs?
Tire PSI Foeget the door sticker! If ya are as old as I am, get out the bi-focals and read the suggeseted tire psi for your tires. Different brands use diferent PSA. The right psi makesa world of difference for ride quality and tire life. I have 289,000 hard heavy miles with and am going great with the 3rd set of tires!!!!
