Ok, I have a chance to buy a 6.2 powered Sub which would work out awsome for a family rig. I met the guy and we test drove the Sub and it builds 17psi which has me a little skeerd. Now this thing has a Banks Sidewinder kit with a fairly fresh engine installed. How long do you 6.2 guys think this poor engine can handle that kind of boost. Any advise is why I'm here. Thanks waytogo
As long as the EGT's dont go through the roof, i bet it would be alright. Thats a lot of boost for a non-intercooled 6.2.
From everything I have read and researched stock you don't wanna run more than 12 psi to avoid head gasket and head failure unledd you stud the head and girdle the caps. The computer controlled 6.5s are set to set a check engine if boosts over 12 psi and we made it do that when we reversed the vacuum lines on Joe's 94 6.5
Thats kinda what I thought. I'ff I buy this rig I will for sure limit the Boost with a waste gate adjustment. From what I've herd the 6.2 is OK with 10 to 12 psi. I'll need to make this thing bullit proof due to the fact that my Wife is gonna drive-abuse this thing every day. I've have a 90 gas Sub now that passes everything but a gas station and with gas here at $2.60 a gal FREE diesel is looking better. Thanks for the replys and I hope to hear more waytogo
you can buy a spring adjustable wastegate control for those enginse from http://www.ssdieselsupply.com/index.html
Mine is an unmodified Banks install with the screw turned 1/4 turn per their instructions. I get a max of 12psi and 950-1,000F. He has the fuel turned up too much--turn it down a bit after you get it. You don't need a wastegate as it doesn't spool that quickly. Your initial scoot from a stop is courtesy of that 22:1 compression and if you'll see about 5psi ~650F most of the time if you drive aggressively, but sanely. To get it to 12psi 1,100F (Banks' published max EGT) you are going to have the pedal to the floor and the engine wound out or be pulling an 8% hill with your trailer.
I ussume this rig has pyro and boost gauges. Just educate the missus to keep the thing out of the 'CRISPY ZONE' 1000F is max and then I prefer slightly lower say 850 to 900. If it will make 17 its been turned up for sure. An intercooler would be in order . The Banks setups for the 6.2 dont use a wastegate. the system is designed so the small turbo simply cant push any more air than it was designed as long as the setup instructions are followed. The boot on the pedal is the best control and an eye on the gauges.
i have a turbo charged 6.2 running 6.5 injectors gm5 turbo with no intercooler running 20 psi of boost with a methenal injection and i can cherp all four tires quit ez on wet pavment in strait gear (meth 6.5 turbo, th400, 203 doubler). been using it as my daily driver all summer avg. 23 to 26 mpg on the highway, drops to 18 to 16 in city (3.73 gears on 35'' bfg m/t) runnig 65 down the inter state i can usally keep the egts down around mid 850 to upper 925. the 49% methenal and 51% water formal i run helps a lot on the in lower egt's and the increased fuel mileage. been running this set up all summer and have logged a little over 15000 miles with no problems, but i also drive like i have a brain, ez on the gas and dont put my hole foot in it till after its in second gear (trying to be ez on the trans and t-case). my wife loves driving it cause she says it hauls (us ur mind buts not the word she uses). but i also repaced the factory head blots with arp's stud kit for the 6.2, along with a set of high torck head gasket, but long story short if u do get the truck and u get conserned with the egt's getting to high, look in to a meth injection kit, snowperformance makes several good kits to look at or u can do what i did and just order the pump and the injection nossle from them, and get ur own tank (mine is a 14 gal. tank) and build it ur self there r many oppitons to what u can do to lower the egt's methal injection just one of the ezer ones. best of luck in ur desision.
17 PSI with the Banks kit should not be possible. Sounds like either the gauge isn't working right, or somebody stuck a different turbo on there. Banks kits use turbos small enough so wastegates aren't needed. A Banks kit should have: early kits use a Rajay Rotomaster turbo - model 3AA1EE10B1 later use a Garret T04B
