I Am Playing With The Thought Of Up Grading To A Bigger Turbo :d Any Of You Guys Tryed This Yet !!!! Or Just Chips Does Anyone Just Make A Replacement Turbine That Flowes Better Then Stock ?
Oh, the possibilities! List your truck, mods, intended mods later, all the info. There are many options depending on truck, power level, and use.
SHE IS A 04.5 STOCK !!!!! TOW-RIG I HAVE AROUND 65K ON IT AND ARE STARTING TO TOY WITH ALL MY OPTIONS. I DO VERY MILD TOWING WITH IT SAY 8,000 LBS 2 TO 5 HOURS EVERY 2 TO 4 WEEKS. I AM THINKING SOMETHING LIKE A 5" EXHUST WITH A ATI 3000 TURBO AND A NEW AIR BOX. WITH SOME KIND OF CHIP. I HAVE AROUND $3500 TO PLAY WITH waytogo
Well, there are several options I would rate WAY ahead of ATS. BD super B single or Special would be a nice, fast spooling upgrade with some power upgrades. I would lean more towards the Super B special. Industrial Injection offers the PS62, which is similar to the Super B but a little bigger and a little more money. HTT is an option. The Super Stock 62 looks like it should be up your ally as well. For a chip I would say the TST R49 will give you all the power you will want and more, for a while. Mileage is outstanding as well, includes Boost and pyro gauges, cool down timer, egt limiting, and such. Also, adjustable on the fly. Stack the Smarty with it and HOLD ON! 5" is a good idea, really help the flow when you are towing. What transmission do you have? This will be your limiting factor. As for intake, I would say you should look at the AEM Workhorse. Dryflow is the way to go. Also, if you are inventive, you can fab up your own intake with an Amsoil Nanofiber filter and an AFE Torque Tube.
IT IS A AUTO THAT I WAS PLANNING ON NOT TOUCHING WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE ME WITH THOSE OPTIONS HOW MUCH POWER CAN THAT STOCK AUTO TAKE BEFOR I GOT TO GET IN THERE !!!
The stock auto will safely handle 75hp increase. 100-120hp increases are possible but will give you slipping in some situations. I would recommend a Valve Body are the VERY least. Also, a converter wouldn't be a bad idea.
You are actually better off. See, transmissio pressures ramp up as you increase throttle position. So, with your altitude robbing you of 10% of your power, in theory, your transmission should see 10% more throttle and ramp up pressures accordingly. This is good, but the difference will probably be minimal, as the factory VB really is pretty close to junk. They only make like 90 psi of line pressure stock. My race transmission makes 190psi!
Depends on how you load them. If you try hard enough, I can see an Edge EZ breaking an input. But, I can see 500HP trucks with stockers. You beat on it, its gonna break.
The small exhaust turbine housing acts as a choke point (9 cm/2 cross section) in our trucks. Thanks to all this smog crap, they want instant spool up to cut the smoke. A turbo with a larger housing is the way to go, however if you get too large-it'll take until christmas to spool up after you've massed it. DD
After talking to the guys at Industrial Injection, I'm saving my pennies for a Super Phat Shaft 62. They feel it will be more than adequate to support the fueling of my "hot" Juice while still providing the quick spool-up of the stocker. The wastegate is mechanically set at 45 psi, but can be adjusted on the truck up to 65 psi (after the proper engine mods have been made, i.e. head studs). At 65 psi, this turbo will support 600 hp at the wheels. They even claim a mileage increase under "normal" driving conditions, what ever that is.imp: Your stock turbo should be able to support and additional 60-70 hp worth of fueling over stock. Much more than that and the stocker can start to get grouchy. Not to rain on your parade, but if you plan on adding enough fuel to justify a turbo upgrade, you'll be pushing a lot more power than your stock trans will hold up to. To build your transmission "right" will pretty much shoot away that $3500.00 you have to play with. But playing with power is addictive. Once you get a taste of it, you'll find a way to get the $$$$ to keep your parts happy!waytogo Happy modding!
I agree with the Diesel-Dude, there was a good recent write-up on the Super Phat-62 in TDR that mirrors what you say. I'll bet your Dad is glad he's not still buying your tires... DD
