Apparently, not much. If you order a 2008 F650 or F750, you have a choice of two engines: - The 6.7L Cummins used in the Dodge 2500 and up pickupsrotfl , and, - The 7.2L CAT C7waytogo - No "Ford" engines offered No 6.0L PSD, no 6.4L PSD.... i think they have confidence in it, but really how often do you see the powerstroke in the 650/750's. i think the people buying those trucks prefer the i6's.
The Cummins is a very good package unlike the 6.4 or 6.0, or for the early models of that particular engine.
I just read in this months Diesel Power Magazine (July 07) that the 6.4 may be recalled. The magazine said, "There seems to be no winning for Ford, the '08 Super Duty, and the diesel engine. The newest trouble has to do with a recall following claims of tailpipe fire (and bless You Tube for already sprouting video of these supposed events). According to Reuters, Ford is eyeballing three cases in which leaking fuel or oil apparently ignited when trapped in a diesel particulate filter before the tailpipe." I don't know about ya'll but it sure does look like Ford and International may have more problems than just the old 6.0.
It really is unfortunate for Ford that they've had such bad luck with their engines. No wonder they wouldn't go below 3% above invoice when I was looking at buying a new truck last year. They HAVE to make that money so they can afford warranty work. Gotta love the EPA... Of course, Dodge has had an issue with the 6.7, too, with a defective engine part (can't remember what it was--sorry--someone may have already posted about that here...) Grrrrr.... EPA....
The Ford loyalists seem to be true to their brand, though. I have a couple of friends who will buy nothing else but Ford. And it always amazes me due to the fact that they have had much more trouble with their rigs than the other two, Chevy and Dodge. Out of all the rigs that we use for construction there is one Chevy, and older DMax, one Ford, that the owner would love to get rid of and yet can't seem to even give the truck away, and seven Dodges. We have been using the Dodges almost exclusively now for a few years now. With no major problems. But, I have gotta hand it to the Ford folks. They will stand by their brand to the end. This is just not something that is all that common anymore. I hope that Ford gets things all worked out. I would to see the Big Three down to two.
Those of us around here are very brand loyal, but I have stated it and will state it again the 6.0 is why I didnt get a diesel.
Man this is way in the past...that problem was recalled bout a month after they came out, and has been fixed fo several months! Not a problem, at all.
Well it will only be out till 2010 so I dont think Ford is going to have as many recalls as the early 6.0's did.
You know, thinking back, ford didn't offer the tried and true 7.3 diesel in the 650's and 750's when it was available. The larger trucks need the power and torque of the Cat and Cummins engine. The only reason that I'm choosing the Ford is that General motors and Dodge don't offer a regular pickup truck in a 4500 series truck. I don't really need the 450/4500, but am going with it so that I can retire and full-time in my trailer and not have to buy a bigger truck if I decide to get a bigger and heavier trailer. Plus, if the truck is towing lots below it's max, it should last me much longer.
I personly think ford should've stuck with the 7.3 PSD. I didnt get a new ford because of the problems with the 6.0 PSD. They need to give the new 6.4 PSD a year or two to get all of the kinks out of it, then it might turn out like the 7.3 PSD and be a damn good engine. I think the 7.3 PSD is the best, mine has 317,500 miles on it and still runing strong.opcorn: People just need to stop spreading roomers and sit back and wait for ford to get all the kinks out of the new engine.waytogo
Yers but the 6.4 is getting dropped in 2010 the later model 05 to 07 6.0's were good or as good as the last gen of 7.3's. The 6.7 will be the test of Fords inhouse ability and I do hope they hit the nail on the head the first time this time.
Yet the little old Cummins 6.7 that is in a Dodge is plentyrotflrotflrotfl. I have not met one person happy with there 6.4, its actually kind of fun going up and asking "how do you like that new Ford". I love the well the cabs been off it already, engines been out, and so on...
their not droppin the 6.4 in 2010. their contract with international is thru 2012. then ford will have their diesel ready. and after almost a year, the 6.4's are looking better. the fuel mileage is starting to go up, and their correcting the problems. i think they have got a good engine finally. and the majority of 6.4 owners really like em.
they had to drop the 7.3 cuz of emmisions, i know they didnt want to but the epa made em. so dont blame ford, blame the government.
