A friend of mine has an f350 with the 460 that won't run above an idle, starts fine, but when you go to drive, it spits and sputters and then stalls. Where should he start looking to fix it?
check to see if you have a vacuum leak first, if thats ok then look at the fuel system. go from cheapest to most costly. Filter, pump, carburator. if those dont fix it then look carefully at your ignition system. same way, plugs, coil, module. could possibly be all 6 pieces. good luck.waytogo
It's actually fuel injected, which is what is stumping a bit more. Too many sensors. I'll start with the fuel filter and go from there, maybe check fuel pressure at the rail right?
yeah I shoulda realized from the year of the truck sorry. for the fuel injection the filter may be intank, check your rail pressure, fuel pressure regulator, and injectors. if rail pressure is down or fluctuating the FPR is likely the problem, though the pump may be going out. verify your pressure with the specs in a manual, some are 35psi, 50psi, 80psi, or over 100psi. The pressures are measured at multiple RPM levels so verify that they match.
OK, I am heading down to his place tomorrow to take a look. He doesn't have alot of tools, so what do you suggest I take with me? Here is an email of what its doing. "alright heres the deal with the ford. Symptoms: Idles rough Lags once as you step on the pedal then gets up and goes. when it warms up, if you step on the pedal and it hesitates, will stall then the truck will not restart till cools. Things i have changed and ruled out: Distributor Timing ICM Coil TPS Things it may be: Fuel Pressure Vehicle speed sensor Vacuum leak Idle air control sensor Fuel Pump Fuel Filter MAP Sensor" What should I start with after the fuel filter and test the fuel pressure if those aren't it?
Got it running! But it turned out to be something we both didn't expect. The computer was throwing an IAC code, when I pulled it off I found the problem. A mouse nest in the IAC valve! It was packed full of seat insulation. Bet that mouse had a rude awakening a few months ago when we first started it! We ended up doing plugs wires, the IAC, a temp sensor, and after the first successful test run, the booster fuel pump died, replaced that and now it runs great!
