I'm seriously considering putting propane on my 05 2500. Main reason is for fuel economy. Already have AEM Brute Force air intake, Areo Turbine exhaust, Bully Dog downloader and outlook monitor. I've seen some kits on ebay that are just a do it yourself affair: regulator, hoses, etc. I know that Bully Dog has electronics to go with their setup but it cost about $250 more. Anybody have any experience with this? Is the Bully Dog that much better (or better protected) than just a regulator setup? Also, who else sells propane kits. I subscribe to Diesel Power but don't see any advertisements for propane. Lots for H2O/Meth injection, but that seems to be mainly for lower EGTs while towing and I don't tow much. One more thing: Anybody got a link for an under bed tank? Any input would be helpful.
Stay away from the DIY kits. If you've ever heard horror stories about propane, they're all engineered in somebody's back yard. Stick with a well-known company and get a kit with some safety features; back yard kits almost always lack any type of safety shut-off, and rarely are set up to use D.O.T. approved propane tanks, which is critical for both safety & legality. ATS has both in-bed & below-bed tanks, or just a kit to mount any tank up in the bed. Most that I know of from other companies come set up to mount below.
I agree, so many ways to get power and fuel economy other than running propane. What you save at the pump you will pay on the motor in the long run. We like transfer-flow tanks, they have a lot of good options for after market tanks, excellent quality! http://www.transferflow.com/
I think propane is outstanding for fuel economy, and a well-designed kit should not hurt the engine at all, because you don't actually burn the propane. It's the poorly designed, "back yard engineered" kits that endanger the engine, because they often end up injecting propane and igniting it. Propane just helps you get the most out of the diesel that's already in the cylinder.
