I bought a used 28' enclosed car trailer that has Air conditioning, 110 volt wiring and inside and outside lighting. The guy I bought it from used a semi-portable generator that he would put outside the trailer, then plug the trailer in. There is no specific place to mount the generator, example, no outside generator door or enclosure in the trailer. Anyhow, any suggestions on a generator for this thing?
need to figure out how many watts your pulling at full load to determne what generator to get. volts x amps = wattage
I have one in my enclosed hauler and made a box that seperates it from the rest of the trailer with an exterior door.
I had a trailer that was wired for 110. The RV style air conditioner was easily started off a 3000w honda or Kipor generator. The 2000w would start it barely but it recomended more than that. I could run the lights and space heaters off a 2500 watt sustained generator but that was about all. When I needed the air conditioner and lights and fans and my tire warmers for the motorcycle I would run it off a 5500w generator but I hated it because mine was old and loud. I did everything I could to make it quiet but it never was. I would look for the quietest generator that you can find. My friend Derek sells these and they are awesome for the price. The larger one is at the bottom of the page. http://stickboyracing.com/generators.html I was going to buy one of his but my new trailer is going to have a 5500w built in. I should say again. GET THE QUIETEST ONE THAT YOU CAN FIND.YOU WILL NOT REGRET GETTING THE QUIET ONE NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU HAVE TO SPEND. I PROMISE not to yell it but just to make it visible. Kipor makes a 6,000w generator that is pretty quiet and runs good. the parts are reasonably easy to find but I have never known anyone that needed anything other than an oil change and the occasional spark plug. This one is the one I was thinking about. They are about half the price of a honda and almost as quiet. http://cgi.ebay.com/KIPOR-6000Ti-QU...ryZ46412QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Hope this helps. Chris
I've been running a 4,000 watt Generac for 9 seasons now in my 20' race trailer, have 2 sets of flourescents, 13,500 A/C unit and usually a battery charger going off it.
The RV gensets are real quiet but also real expensive because they use a low profile design and lots of muffler compared to the standard portable genset. If you can stand the noise and the room needed to enclose one the portable 5500 watt portable runs around $600.00. The RV genset at 5500 watts will set you back around #3000.00. That is a lot of $$ for sound & space savings.
Your looking at least a 3000 watt gen. Honda and Yamaha have some run quiets that are proven, but they are going to cost you at least $1700 for one of the 3000 watt versions.
I paid $1800 for my Honda but it is very quiet and has key start. It is quiet enough at full load to stand next to and hold a normal conversation without raising your voice.I keep mine in the bed of the truck. It is heavy though.
