Had a friend try some synthetic Amsoil 25,000 mile diesel oil, their most expensive blend. Amsoil advertises 25,000 between changes for normal use and 15,000 for heavy or commercial. Just for grins he decided to change the oil at 10,000 and have it analized by blackstone labs for wear....Blackstone reported back that while he was still within tolerances of the oil being good, he shouldn't go beyond 10,000 before changing. Ok, now here's the "zinger"...he's running an Amsoil bypass oil filter system!!! I just just have one comment.."WTFO". I had another friend who had the lab test rotella 15-40 at 7000 miles. Result: good for probably another 1000 miles. I questioned the lab myself on these results and they told me not to waste my money on Amsoil. Talk about some conflicting data and information out there!!!!!
I believe that there is an Amsoil dealer that frequents this site. Perhaps he may have an answer for you. LT.
How many miles on the engine? How long was AMSOIL run in that engine? Is it stock or modified? There are so many factors that play into oil wear. Do you have the results of the analysis that you can scan in and post up here? Modified diesels soot load much more heavily that stock engines. Also if you have an engine with 100k miles of running conventional oil and then switch to AMSOIL, much of the built-up sludge in there will be cleaned off and may slant an analysis during the first time out with AMSOIL or other high grade synthetic. I'd like to know the details and history of this truck as well as see the oil analysis report. -Chuck
hey Chuck, I was waiting for ya...just a little history here, this is an 2006 with about 22,000 miles. This was his third oil change, the stock stuff, rotella and then the amsoil. He put 10,000 on the amsoil. I'll try to remember to see if he can get me the analysis sheet. What really left us scratching our heads was all this on top of the bypass filter. I'm running the 10w40 amsoil now ( if you remember you guys were trying to help me with my leak, and we believed it may have been the 5w30 stuff) so I'm going to test mine at about 10,000 also. It just may take me a while to get there....
You can always email me the analysis sheet and I can take a look at it. You're running the 15W40 now, not the 10W40, right? What modifications are done to the engine? I'll try and shed some light on your findings if I can. Thanks! -Chuck
yeah, me and my friend are both running the 15w40 now, it's described as "synthetic heavy duty diesel and marine motor oil" in their brochure, not the gas and diesel blend 15w40 blend. the only mods on my friends truck is a Banks chip and the by pass filter. Will bigger injectors effect the oil analyisis?
That is the same oil I run in my '02 Cummins and '02 F-350 7.3 company truck. Engine power mods increase fuel, so the more mods you do, the heavier you will soot load your oil. As you increase fueling you should change filters more frequently or do oil analysis more often. While a stock engine might go 30k or 40k miles with a bypass system, a heavily modified engine might only go 15k or 20k. The bypass filters are a huge benefit to heavily fueled engines, but since you're putting stuff into the filter at a quicker rate, you need to take that into consideration. So, to answer the question, yes bigger injectors can affect oil analysis results and soot load your oil quicker. -Chuck
the stuffs good but I quit using it after dads 93 lost oil pressure and my nissan 4x4 started knocking and rattling. Certain apps it's great but like I said I got nervous. I can't afford a overhaul. Nissan 50000 miles 93 dodge about 120000 Ran it about a year in both changing every 6000 miles this happened after about my 4-5 oil change can't say for dad. hell i just run rotella syn cheaper and they got it at wal-mart and tractor supply. just easier for me.
My buddiy has a 94' with the cummins. Its putting out a little over 400hp on the dyno. He changes is oil (rotella dino) every 30k miles, filter changes every 5k miles. Oil tests at 30K miles were very good. Both tests were from CAT and Blackstone. Last I checked the truck had 270K miles on the motor.
Sorry, but my friend never got back with me on his spec sheet from Blackstone. I know he's giving the Amsoil one more try with the heavier grade and another test at 10,000 miles. He racks up a lot of miles so I'll report as soon as he has the results.
