One of the reasons I went with the 285 75R16 (BFG All Terrain T/A KO)tires was to fill the gaping holes in my wheel wells after I upgraded the springs in my Ex. Unfortunately, I think this tire is just too wide to stuff onto a 7" wide wheel. Even aired to 80 psi (LR "E"), I think I'm getting too much side wall flex from the tire. Is there anything out there that will give me the height of the 285 but still work with my stock wheels like the OEM 265s? Too poor right now, and probably a good while longer, to buy wider wheels. Plus, the wheels on an Ex are hubcentric and I'm told they're a real bear to find.

    255/85R16 = 33x10.5"

BFG and Toyo make them with 3400-3750# capacity.

Is that 10.5" tire width or 10.5" wheel/rim width? If it's tire width, would you happen to know if the tire is recommended for a 7" wheel width?
    Thanks.

yes, 10.5" is the tire width, "idealy" you would want to run at least an 8" wide wheel with a 10.5" wide tire.

I think I'm getting there. ;) So the 255/85R16 is a slightly narrower tire. Is there a way to calculate/compare the overall diameter of the two tire sizes?
    Thanks, again.

IMO, a 7" wheel is ideal for 255/85s. I've had them on 6" and 6.5" wheels and they wore evenly there too.

255 is the width in millimeters. 85 is the % of the width that they are tall. Multiply by 2, and add the rim size for the total height.

So I could be wrong... but can't you get a 285 BFG in Load range E? And if so, wouldn't that give you plenty of capacity to avoid sidewall flex?

For some reason I was thinking 12.5" as that was the smallest tire I have had in years, I ran 12.5" wide tire with 8.5" wide wheel which worked great for my application.

just stick with what you have and run the recommended tire pressure thats on your door jam....nitto makes a dura grappler in the 285 size thats E load....you can go to discount and trade the bfgs toward the new dura grappler and pay the difference.....
