Towing the empty trailer (Kaufman tandem car hauler) the rear of the ram 2500 starts bouncing, more like bucking, at around 30 mph. I recently towed 600 miles with over 5,000 lbs and just towed a chevy 1500 pu a few miles today with no issues at all. I don't remember the bucking when towing the trailer empty before, it seems like something new. Its done it two or three times lately. Anyone else have this happen?
mine bounces alot when the trailer is empty too. there isn't enough tounge weight when empty. not really anything you can do, except strap a few cinder blocks on there. usually 200 lbs. does the trick
I have the same problem with my 20 foot Kuafman. I think the axle placement has a little to do with it as well. Mine doe not do it at any other speed than 30MPH either. Just go faster LOL. A box on the tongue with some straps (maybe even a winch) would prolly take care of it though. That is my excuse to get my winch. Good luck
Thanks for the replies. I won't waste anytime trying to track down the cause. It sounds like it is a Kaufman trailer thing since gmcjimmy88's does it at the same speed too. I've towed a few different kinds of trailers empty, but none ever hit their natural frequency like this. If it happens too much I'll load up the tongue with some weight (and not go 30 mph).waytogo
I have a 16' Ashley flatbed, and it bucks. I have added weight distributing hitch equipment to it (snap blocks). I put just enough lift on it to take the weight off the draw bar, and it tows as smooth as glass.
I have a 16" landscaping trailer I pull around. It used to buck a bit when I first bought it. Took it to the tire shop and found one of the tires on the front axle was way out of balance (a lot of trailer manufacturers don't balance the tires). 4 quick spins on the balancer, problem solved!waytogo
Neither. I got it second hand. The vin plate says something like Lexington, NC. Diesel-Dude, thanks, it is a good idea to get em balanced. I was watching it yesterday with only one 21' piece of 3" pipe on it and it looked like the tongue was flexing when it started. I'm going to run a strap from the coupler to the top of the jack and see if by preloading the tongue somewhat the 30 mph bounce goes away.
Any tandem axle I have towed empty did that. If you can lift the tongue to set the ball, than it will buck.
trailer buck I have a 16/4 tri axle and it bucks hard between 26 and 32 MPH and it bucks a little between 48 and 50 MPH. It still bucks even with all new tires, so I was going to look at putting shocks or timbren blocks on the front and rear axles to see if that would solve the problem.
