I have a 2005 gmc 2500 hd extended cab long bed now. with the 6.0 automatic. It is a base truck pretty much Manual windows and locks. I love the truck but the gas milage is killing us since it is my wifes daily driver. It also only has like 4,100 miles on it. Well I seen an 05 crew cab with 41,000 miles on it. I know it is alot of miles for an 05 but could get a hell of a deal on it. Here is a list of its options that mine does not have: crew cab dually bucket seats bose cd (with rear control) roof lights painted bumpers with fog lights dually (of course) power windows power door locks keyless entry alarm carpet OH THE BEST PART DEISEL ALLISON TRANS HEAVY DUTY PACKAGE THE OPTIONS THAT ARE THE SAME AS MINE cruise control ABS All the normal standard stuff I would lose a seat since my 2500 is a bench in the front Now the bad stuff: 4,100 going up to 41,000 miles (which I do not find a big deal since it is the deisel and the allison. It has been used hard from the looks of the bed. There is still some pebbles left under the tailgate when I opened it. Inside the bed is scratched up pretty bad. looks like they was using metal shovels to unload the gravel (not a big though no major dents, nothing a rhino coating wouldn't fix). It has quite a few scratches on the exterior which to be honest it killed me to see my first one on my truck so that isnt too bad either. One of the fiberglass fenders has a chip missing at the wheel-well opening about three inches long. It isnt too noticable. I will post a pic of both and tell me what you all think? The more replies the better. I am looking at trading almost even maybe I might have to add $1-2K in on the deal. Again please give me all your opinions.
One thing if your wife is going to DD the dually have her test drive it. Mine hated to drive the Duallies I've owned in the past. waytogo
I have thought about that. One of the reasons I like the idea with one that already has a few scratches on it. LOL Where is all of the input on this. I figured I would get alot more replies so far. Anyway thanks for the thoughts and inputs.
I agree with Super. The crewcab turns like the Titanic and with the Dually it's even worse. She may however prefer the extra cab room and the Diesel is the only way to go IMHO.
What about the mileage difference? I realize the deisel should outlast the 6.0 any day but going from 4 thousand miles to 40 thousand may be a deciding factor?
How many miles does your wife average a year? Mine puts 17-20K a year on her car. But I average 6K a year on mine. How much time/ mileage is left on the factory waranty?
well we have had the 2500 for 2 months now and we have put 4000 miles on it. So I would say 20-25,000 a year. It is also our travel vehicle. N.C. to FL and to OH once or twice a year. The 3500 is out of the wrranty but I would not do it unless the same 100,000 mile warranty was on it that is on my 2500.
Id say head back to the dealer and trade your tuck in on the diesel you should've got in the first place. With the employee priceing you probably wont have to spend too much out of pocket.
Only problem is I cannot find any new 3500 deisels new around here. The one I am looking at is used with 40,000 miles
whats wrong with a 2500hd diesel? it will tow your load just fine, be cheaper than the 3500 and will get better milage.
If you can trade a base model small block gas truck strait across for a loaded Dmax dually then that is no brainer, even if you have to throw in 1-2K. Forget about the mileage, 41K is better anyway because you don't have to deal with the break in blues. With these newer trucks the difference between 4K and 41K is not much really. Don't trade trucks soley on wanting better mileage. In most areas diesel is more expensive than regular gas and the Dmax only gets a few miles to the gallon better than the 6.0 anyway. Plus, a fuel conditioner should be used every once and a while with a tank of fuel. I would bet fuel savings doesn't add up to a whole lot. As for the scratches and the bed, that all depends on how bad you think it is and if it's acceptable blemishes for an used truck. My dad just bought a 2002 Dodge Cummins Dually and although it is a very nice truck, it had a fair amount of scratches and was worked hard since it came from Colorado, has a gooseneck hitch, and has an exhaust brake. We are sure it was worked hard but that was acceptable. I would not let your wife daily drive that truck for two reasons... 1. It's a 1 ton dually...lets be honest fellas....I don't know of anybody's wife that pulls a gooseneck down to the grocery store to load up. I mean, if she needs a truck like that for some reason then thats great,but.....like I said, I don't know any wife that needs a 1 ton dually with a diesel. Seems a sedan or minivan would be a much cheaper and more practical choice, especially if you two have kids. 2. A big long dually is not easy to drive through town and a mini van is going to be cheaper to drive anyway. Anyway, like I said, I would trade a base model gasser in for that Dmax dually that doesn't have hardly any miles on it in a heart beat. If the carrying capacity, stability, and power is needed of course.
Sorry for not updating this for awhile. No we decided against trading. Did not want to fork out the extra cash and lose the 100,000 mile warranty that we have now. I am still looking for a 2500 deisel though. I found one without a bed I need to call about but I will most likely just keep this one for awhile.
