A buddy of mine picked up an 05 3500 CCab 4x4 DMax and now were gonna pervert it with a 4 inch exhaust, Air cleaner and a Edge A2. Has anyone here done the turbo back system yet and what gains have you seen from it?
He will definately throw EGR codes when removing the cat. Also, don't waste money on the air cleaner assembly or filter unless it's only for more noise. The stock AC part has been proven to flow and filter better than any aftermarket unit. If you want to do the exhaust, go to dieselplace.com and search for "Fingerstick". It will allow you to remove the EGR.
Thanks a TON for the info. I guess we'll be ordering a EGR block off and the module to fool the computer .
Don't plan on any big performance gains from the 4" exhaust either. Even with a chip the 4" is largely only to lower EGT. The only (arguably) real benefit is quicker turbo spool (but it's not much really) and a simple mufler upgrade will net you 95% of the same results, particularly non-chipped, but also good enough for all but serious chips/upgrades. The stock exhaust is amazingly good, with the exception of the muffler... Oh, and I agree totally on just keeping the stock air intake.
I'd have to agree with a simple muffler upgrade/elimination doing the trick but quicker spoolup is always nice. EGT's are gonna be a factor because this guy has a pretty big 5er. Cats and soot just don't get along. I seen plenty of that with the Cats being installed on new trucks at work. They are plugging at very low mileage and getting hot enough to burn the paint of the back of the cabs :doah: and turning the chrome blue
well I disagree with about 50% of what has been suggested. I have seen the results on the dyno for improvement with an afe intake on the LLY's. But bigger than that is the customer feedback on the increase in fuel milage. I don't think I would recommend dropping the cat unless you are experiencing uncontrollable EGT's. They will heat up a little more but no power difference and will create more noise. If your on a budget do a 3535 Aero Muffler and call it good. If you want to do more add the MBRP or Banks cat back ss exhaust. Not trying to ruffle any feathers but we have been averaging a LLY a day and gathering lots of feedback and seen a few on the dyno, feel free to give us a call with questions 541-726-1006 Mike www.DunksPerformance.com
Well, you've got my attention. No worries about ruffling feathers here, I'm always looking for more information, particularly if it corrects a misunderstanding on my part. Not having access to a dyno or piles of parts, I have had to do most of my "research" on forums just like this. But I've seen time and again with dyno sheets from folks like John Kennedy where there was no significant performance increase with various after market intake systems including AFE and K&N. The same for larger exhaust. They had a couple of "dyno days" where people with trucks ranging from stock to heavy mod ran various parts swapped from one rig to another. I don't recall the exact details, but the over all consensus was that there was no significant benefit for mild to moderately bombed trucks and I know of several (including myself) who went *back* to stock. I personally never noticed any diff at all between the two, fuel mileage or performance... <shrug>
Well first lets keep things in perspective, yes your not going to gain 50hp like some of the intake companies claim! Across the board however I have been seeing 4-8hp, but the big kicker with my customers seems to be the throttle response and fuel mileage out of the AFE stage 1 and 2. Now exhaust, no increased hp but we do those for cooling and the big secret seems to be that damn stock muffler wouldn't flow a fire. Now if your looking for power out of your exhaust then you need to be looking into an aero muffler. The last mustang dyno run I saw out of portland showed 8hp with a 3535 on an LLY. Now remember that no two trucks are the same, no two dyno's are the same, and no two drivers are the same. Mike www.DunksPerformance.com
I can chime in on this one with actual results. This is exhaust only as I haven't changed (nor do I plan too) the intake. Cat in place, muffler bypassed and 6-Gun set at level 6 = 350 horse. 2 weeks later, same dyno, same time of day and conditions, cat delete, 4" banks system, 6-gun at level 6 again = 400 horse. Wouldn't have beleived it if I hadn't seen it and the Dyno sheets to back it up. Also saw an EGT drop of around 200 degrees. FYI, mine is an '03 LB7.
