I recently purchased a 1998.5 (24v) Dodge 3500 dually with the Cummins/Auto. The truck has the full Banks Power Pack on it. The power is nice, but I am a bit concerned about the auto trans. My concerns appear to be warranted as the trans has begun hunting for the correct gear between 1100-1400 RPM at about 41-46MPH. If my foot is in it, it won’t hunt. Or, if I am just cruising with almost no throttle, it won’t hunt. However, in just general cruising (about 80% off the time), it will hunt around. I called Banks to ask their opinion and it just turned into one big sales pitch. I have been told that I may need to have the trans reprogrammed by Dodge due to a service bulletin and that my TC may be on it’s way out, or I may be having a vacuum issue. I just wanted to get some opinions off this board. Does anyone know of a good So Cal trans specialist I can take this to? Thanks Miles
Sounds like it's your torque converter hunting. This could be as simple as two things. 1. YOu need to reset your APPS. 2. Your grounds on the batteries are getting dirty. To reset your APPS, disconnect the ground cables from the battery, then turn your headlights on for a second or two to drain any capacitors. Let the truck sit for about 30minutes, reconnect your grounds, turn the key to "ON", and slowly push the accelerator to the floor and slowly bring it off of the floor and back to it's stop, shut the key off. Obviously, you could clean your ground cables while you wait 30 minutes and get #2.
same exact thing happened to my truck and i had a buddy check for codes or what have you and he told me the comp needed to be flashed by the dealership because he couldnt find the codes that were coming up after disconnecting everything and leaving .the problem just quit i dont know if he reset something or what but it has been 2 years since then and hasnt done it again
Flash the computer I have the same truck and after pulling a heavy load over the Pocono mtns and then another through Vail pass, it was apparent my 47RE trans needed some help (had about 200K). I had my trans rebuilt with an upgraded converter and mods to the valve body. The truck continued to lock and unlock the converter randomly, which was one of the symptoms prior to the rebuild. I took it back to the trans builder and he found a TSB #182 that it applied to vehicles equipped with a 5.9L 24 valve diesel engine and auto trans built between Jan. 1, 1998 and Dec. 18, 1998. I had the PCM flashed and the problem was solved. In 3 years of towing with this truck, I have learned to take it to the place that does the most repairs on this drivetrain, not necessarily a Dodge dealer or Cummins repair facility. The more experience leads to quicker recognition of common & uncommon problems.
Explain please. Could you please define APPS? I'm not sure about "and get #2" is that just another reference to cleaning the terminals? Thanks for your help, did not mean to hijack the thread.
APPS - accelerator pedal position sensor. The trans gets a false signal that the pedal has moved and begins to downshift to acommodate it.
