I have a 2002 ho with about 50,000 miles. Bought with about 30,000 miles. Not used for heavy work. About 7000 miles ago I started burning oil...approx 1/3 qt per 100 miles. I see no signs of a leak. The things that have changed is I started using amsoil and of course the new ultra low sulfur fuel. Is it possible that the lubricity levels in the cyclinders could have damaged my engine???
Mine did something similar a few years ago, not as bad. Ran some Power service diesel kleen (grey bottle), 1/2 bottle per tank and it cleared up. Maybe a sensor was dirty??? Sure you don't have a leak? Rear main on the the back of the motor, front engine cover, valve cover??
oil leak thanks I'll try that and look more for a leak. If it is leaking it's only when I'm running, nothing ever on the garage floor. How could a dirty sensor cause the burning? Please explain, that's "above my pay grade".It just kills me because I'm so anal about taking the best possible care of my motor and low and behold I got this big heavy duty motor burning oil at 50,000 miles and I have this little pissy nissan with 250,000 miles and doesn't burn a drop...typical.
Its not smoking is it? You have a 6 year old pickup with only 50,000 miles on it. That tells me that truck has sat most of its life. It is possible to have some ring damage if it sits in the right climate...
I'm not sure its a dirty sensor, all I know when mine started doing it. I ran the PS kleaner and it stopped. I have no idea why or the cause, just trying to help. Would love to know why myself. If you figure it out, let us all know.
burning oil I don't use the truck as a daily driver but it doesn't sit very long without running either. I would think that a truck would have to sit several months...if that, to do ring damage...wouldn't you think? I just swithed to amsoil about 7,000 to 10,000 mies ago, which is when I started having trouble, they recommend the 3000series 5w-30. Ill let you guys know if I figure something out...
I'd say go back to something like Rotella 15w-30 and see if the problem persists. 5w-30 seems awefull thin to me... *Bought the power service leen at wally world, grey bottle.
Yes, I think you should go for the 15W40. Try the Amsoil 15W40 before abandoning it. Its great oil. From there, its a matter of finding the problem. 50k isn't much wear. I wish you were closer and I could take a look at it. Smoking? Blue smoke? ANy oil in the tail pipe? Oil spray where you start up the truck? 1 qt every 300 miles is a lot of oil.
you threw me a curve twice there. How did you decide to run the 15w-40?, that's what I ran when I was running Rotella but the techs at amsoil say to run the 3000 series 5w-30, also I wasn't expecting to hear you say you burn about a qt every 7M...do you think that's normal? I didn't burn any oil the first 20M I owned my truck.
First thing is your running to light of an oil. It's going to consume it due to the tollerances. Second, just because it's easy and quick, check your turbo for wear. If you have a seal going bad it can consume oil. Check it for play up and down and side to side. If you don't mind taking things appart a little... pull the intake horn off at the head, down to the top intercooler boot. Run your finger inside there and see if you find oil. If you do, replace the turbo. I'd really suspect that oil being thin is the issue.
thanks dieseldood, I was reading through the amsoil catalog again and see that the 15w-40 is also recommended. And since the thing started losing it about the time I changed from the rotella 15w-40 I suspect you guys are right. I'll also check out the turbo.
I run the AMSOIL AME 15W40 since the Cummins engine has traditionally speced a 15W40 and not a lighter oil. I also have a friend who had a Duramax that would consume 5W30 but not 15W40. Also, the 15W40 AMSOIL is cheaper and still a Group IV synthetic. -Chuck
Ordering the 15W40 as I type...(well, not quite yet, one more question first) Are you running the amsoil heavy duty diesel and marine or the blend gas and diesel...both are 15W40 and listed together in the catalog.
