I going to upgrade the cam in the burb before I run out and buy a diesel. I hate car payments. The burb has a 350 vortec motor, hydraulic roller cam. The one that's in it is a L98 flavor. Guess it was a good cam for a car and does well on the flat land but these long hills REALLY slow me down (25-30mph ) I've already talked to Comp Cams and have their recommendation. Still need to call Crane and get their opinion. After I get the cam picked out I will have the chip redone. Anyone here upgraded their cam? Which one? and do you like it?
I have a K1500 Suburban, 3.73's, same engine. I have been pondering the LT1 cam or the HT383 cam. You don't want to got any higher in duration, just lift. But the Vortec heads can't handle too much lift without new springs and possibly deeper spring pockets. I think .450 is max. You might consider 1.6 rockers, again, watch the lift. LT4 1.6 Rollers are a good choice, but somewhat pricey. Crane made them for GM. Watch the lift for coil bind, keep 0.100 clearance in the spring. Avoid cams intended for cars or lightweight applications, they move the powerband way up and hurt bottom end.
350 vortec cam I have used the Crane Truck Power cam before (hr 260-2-121g) and it worked very well. I installed it on a 3/4 ton 4x4 truck. We did the Crane springs (no machining required) and programer. I was very impressed. Let me know if you would like a price on it. Eldogg Queen City Speed
