Ok, So I turn to you, you folks of knowledge and mechanical wisdom. I know that I am mechanically inclined but the one thing that stops me in my tracks is figuring out rear gear ratios. I'm doing my homework, hoping to have a new truck shortly. I have it down to where I really like the Chevy Silverado. I've always had 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks. This time I'm opting for a simple kind of ride. I'm keen on a 2008 Silverado 1500, Reg Cab, 8 ft bed, 2 wheel drive. Here's the curve ball. I like the 4.8 liter with the auto transmission. I won't be doing a ton of towing like in the past. (everyone has bought thier own trucks now) I'm thinking eventually a pop-up camper and a landscape type trailer for yard/home improvement stuff. 3 ratios are offered with the Silverado. 3.23, 3.42 and 3.73. I believe the 3.23 will not even be considered. The truck will be used for commuting to work which is 50 miles round trip where 90% of that is highway. I'm thinking 3.42 being middle of the road would be the best for what I plan to do. I ask for comments and advice from those who have an opinion on this. Thanks in advance for your time and help. Chas
Personally, I like lower ratios with gas engines. I think a 4.10 ratio is about right with stock 31" tires when an overdrive trans is equipped. I'd go 3.73's, no question IMHO.
