I am looking at getting some upgrades to help towing/horsepower and better gas mileage. What are some of the things out there for an 05 2500 HD 6.0 with the auto overdrive (I think it is the Alison but noot sure). Thinking about doing duals and a programmer. Also is the K&N or Air Raids worth the money? What else is out there for these trucks? Thanks for any help
As I recall, the Alli was only available behind the 8.1 and DMax. I think the 6.0 got a 4L80E. K&N, AirAid, and the rest are all "snake oil". And in my opinion, that is a fact. (get it? ) Anyway, dyno after dyno after dyno along with time slip after time slip (and so on) proves that they make NO difference for the vast majority of motors. They do have some other benefits, and absolutely have some draw backs (much worse at filtering than paper/gauze) but generally it is not a measurable (and verifiable) performance or mpg enhancement. Lots of people will claim this or that, but when accurate tests are made, it is *never* substantiated that I have seen except in K&N and AirAid marketing propaganda. For example, my K5 has a nicely built little motor in it. It also had an AirAid on it when I got it. I removed it and put a stocker back on with NO noticeable change in mileage or performance. And while that change did not hurt anything it did help! Drivability with a cold engine on cold mornings was much better due to the heat stove actually working. Other than that, no noticeable difference except a little less bling under the hood. Duals don't really help much except for the very top rpm ranges and may actually hurt low/mid range power, particularly with the modern computer controlled vehicles. Not sure how that applies to a new 6.0, but I would suggest you do some careful research (and don't trust the marketing propaganda) before purchasing. Same for "programmers". On gassers, the return on investment is usually fairly small. They can adjust timing and fuel mix a bit for a nice boost, but nothing at all like a similar investment will net on a modern diesel. Unfortunately, there is no simple but significant enhancement that I have ever heard of for the gassers. It's always been a "full package" deal if you want to get them boosted up a bit. And that is further complicated (dramatically) by the modern invasive computer controls. You can no longer just add matched heads, cam, intake, exhaust and fuel mods to get dramatic improvements because the computer will have stroke. So that starts another long, expensive, and often frustrating effort to get the computer to play nice.
I got a really nice chip tune for $75 that made a dramatic difference in performance and fuel mileage. Let me know if you want more info about it. I am extremely pleased with the way it turned out.
I'm sure he will be interested, and so am I. My neighbor had a 2003(?) 1500 with 6.0 and after seeing what the chip did for mine, he got one for his. Not sure which one, but it "got good reviews" according to him. But his gas mileage didn't really change, he said "maybe 1/2 mpg if that". He also said it seemed to respond a little better "leaving a light" but that over all he was really "disappointed".
http://www.wait4meperformance.com/ He is based in Warsaw, IN. I'm fairly close by so I went up there personally and had him tune mine in-vehicle, but it's still a great deal if you do it through the mail. His $75 special runs through August I think. I'd tell you to tell him that I sent you but I doubt he'll remember me, he does hundreds of these a month.
