Today me and my dad went on an 11hr roundtrip to pick up a cucv I bought. His truck is a 96 f350 dually, 7.3 5spd, 4.10 gears Anyway, on the way home it got progressively harder & harder to shift. By the time we got home, you had to jam it into 2nd, and 1st took a ton of fiddling before it would drop in. Reverse also was a pain to get in. Backing the trailer into the yard and getting it positioned took forever. After the truck sat & cooled for awhile it shifted just fine, what could it be? Ive heard of a bushing on the clutch pedal, but it doesnt make sense that it would shift easily after it cooled off. I also thought maybe the clutch fluid was boiling or perhaps the tranny fluid. Any thoughts? Oh yeh, we made the whole trip down there, turned the truck off for about 10 mins to fuel up, 15 mins to load the truck, and stopped once for 10mins to fuel up on the way back, so it never had a chance to cool off at all.
yeh cause fueling up, goin in to take a leak so it was unattended, etc etc. I dont think itd be the clutch wearing out, I mean, the truck only has 76 or 77k miles, and the clutch was warrantied at like 12 or 13k.
I also have a 96 f350 mine does the same thing i had it checked and the mechanice said the sycrinizers are going out. I just double clutch it going into second and third. And the same going back down. I'm just waitng for the tranny to go out before getting it fixed. Kind of annoying but still gets me around.
Nah I figured it out today, the clutch pushrod bushing is shot, so the clutch has about an inch and a half or 2" of slop.
