I have a 1997 F350 7.3 diesel crew, long box 4x4 that I use for hauling our 4-horse trailer. I bought it brand new in 1997 and have always maintained it. I was wondering if anyone has any info on transmission-clutch issues? It's making noise on deceleration under load in all gears, it's more noticeable in the lower gears than the higher gears. It's doesn't make a noise under acceleration. Not sure if it's the dual mass fly-wheel, clutch, or tranny? Truck has 150,000 miles and has never been touched. Any input is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!

I would guess its the dual-mass flywheel. Had a friend with a similar problem in his 97 psd. Does it have any vibration at all?

    Hi,
Thanks so much for your post. It actually has a howl clicking sound and there isn't really a vibration. Wondering if you or anyone knows how to check a dual mass flywheel?
    Thanks!

I dont know of any way to check it other than dropping the tranny so you can get to the flywheel. Its been many years since I helped my friend change his, but as I recall there were springs that you could see in it and it was very easy to see thats where the problem was. Again, thats been a while and I cant recall for sure. Maybe someone else has more experience with this?

If the Dual Mass is going out, the only way to check it is to pull the transmission. With 150K on it, if you have the transmission out you might as well do the clutch. South Bend builds a great clutch and has a kit to replace the dual mass flywheel with an updated solid flywheel. Much better design.
