I am trying to head off injector replacement, so..

Anyone running additional fuel filtration on their DMAX? If so, what brand or kit did you use? How hard was the install? Any other tips/tricks?

Also, can you specify if your is a LB7 or LLY.

    Thanks,
    John

Are you out of warranty. I think it was baddog who said some people had problems with coverage after installing extra filtration.

That is correct. Some people have reported problems when getting injector work done with an after market filter in place, particularly if it is post-OEM.

One thing that has been used to (attempt to?) deny warranty is that the post-OEM filter is not "approved" and could have contaminated the system. And any filter at all in addition to the OEM could lead to excessive low pressure on the intake side and result in air bubbles coalescing in the fuel. These air bubbles combined with the high pressure pump and common rail can result in damage to pump or injectors. But of course you could add a lift pump, which they then use as grounds to deny due to "over pressure" on the intake side of the pump which is designed specifically for "no lift pump".

So, you can't win for loosing. I wanted to add a filter, but rather than risk my 200k warranty when people running the extra filters seem to be having no less trouble than those with only stock, I decided to stick with OEM only…

FWIW, some service writers seem to have no hesitation in doing warranty work with filters in pre OR post config. But even if you know your local guy, I'm too afraid there would be a problem when I'm 1000 miles away from home or something...

I sure liked the filter setup on the 6.9NA fords. It had a big spin-on filter up top in the front of the engine. Very easy to change. I've always carried 1 or 2 extra filters and a filter wrench in all my diesel rigs. It's so easy to plug a filter if you get a bad tank of fuel and changing a filter is better than waiting for a tow, cheaper too. I like the hand primer pump Cat has on their engines too.

I was on board a friend's diesel trawler one time when he got a load of bad diesel in Ensanada. We went thru 15 filters in each Racor before we made it to San Diego. Pulled into 'Diego and he had the tank pumped out and restocked his filter locker. Was the most expensive load of cheap diesel I've seen.

I also carry a spare filter at all times. GM also has the nice hand prime pump too. Takes about 5 minutes to be back on the road if you don't mind a little mess, 15 if you want to be really neat and go through the fender well.

About 5 minutes to change the filter on my Max but I dropped the filter the first time and it took the undercoating off the frame, not from dropping it but seems the diesel just made it come off. A friend said I ought to buy some in a spray can and respray it, but if it came off that easily with the factory spray I dont think the spray kind will stay on any better.

The spray on stuff would probably come off too, but it would be stronger than the factory stuff which is just a sort of oily wax stuff.
