when i worked in the junk yard i almost always found 8 lug 16 inch aluminum rims in the yard... as we all know they weigh less than the steel counter parts. i am sure some of the older AL rims would be strong enough to be used, but would it be worth working for and what are the chances of them fitting correctly? we are talking a tripple axle GN here, so 6 matching would be needed... if i was able to score them CHEAP ya think it would be worth it, or ya think it would be a risk with the AL and weight ratings on a heavy tow?
If the center bore fits stock GM 8 lugs are super strong, light and cheap. Most It can actually can make a difference in stopping as well (rolling mass has more inertia than most people think).
I almost used my old set of Dodge alums on my triple axle. My problem was I had about 1/2" too much backspacing to fit my axles. If you can find a set that doesn't have the late model style deep backspacing than I would do it. Less overall trailer weight and just a little less unsprung weight to get moving and slow down.
yeah, i had in mind the old style SFA AL rims... mags like the general lee. problem is they are cast, so i think i might be SOL and have to look into some aftermarket rims. i have been thinking about just sliding the 19.5's back and buying 2 more once i dually the truck out... some day...
