My '01 CTD makes a short "chirp" on every shutdown. It has 58k miles on it... Is my serpentine belt ready to be replaced? I have to double-check the previous owners maintenance logs, but I don't think he changed it yet. I just sprayed it with belt dressing and ran it for 5 min. but it still chirps. You cant adjust the tensioner either, correct?

Your engine has a compression ratio of 16.3:1. Thats a lot of compression that stops the pistons in a hurry. You also have a big clutch fan. THe engine stops faster than the belt can slow down with the fan. This causes a light chirp as the engine stops but the fan pulley keeps going for a half second. This is what I was told. some trucks chirp, some don't. My '01 chirps, but my dad's '02 doesn't. Thats part of the trademark of these trucks.

I've heard there is some fancy goodyear belt that can make the chirp go away if it's not accepted.

If this characteristic Cummins shutdown "chirp" bothers someone, the Goodyear Gatorback serpentine belt is supposed to minimize the "problem". Mine does it sometimes, but it also makes noise (all the time) and black smoke sometimes as well. Ill-tempered beast, isn't it? Personally, I wouldn't have it any other way! waytogo

My '95 does the same. I love it...That coupled with the "shut down shake" that shakes the whole truck when ya shut it off, brings a smile to my face everytime. :):D

I knew you guys would have the answer! I thought about it being because of all the compression, then thought I was being silly-- HA! ...Now I can't wait until someone asks about it... Then I can make the Tim Allan "Grunt noise" and laugh!

I've been walking around with the owners manual for the last three days, but haven't had a chance to crack it open! I like that its mentioned in there!

    Thanks.

    Belt Chirp

My 98.5 24v was always very noticeable when coming in off the Interstate. Recently I read a post on allowing a cool down idle before shutdown and that makes it alot less noticeable. I just wait for 400 EGT to shutdown.
