I just bought my first new used truck. I want a tonneau cover, so I can stash stuff in the bed on camping trips and not let it get wet if it rains (which it seems to do 24/7 near where I live!). Are those snap-on soft tonneau covers intended to be water proof in these circumstances? Ie heavy downpours? I guess the acid test would be to snap it on and then drive through a car wash. If I did that, would I expect zero water in the bed of the truck when I came out the other end? How about hard covers? Are they any better at keeping stuff under them totally dry?
Some of the hard covers have gaskets on the edges. If you want a hard cover that pops up, that's easy. All of the shell manufacturers have a model that comes down all the way over the bed rails. That should be pretty darn water resistant unless you're driving through a hurricane. If you want a retractable hard cover, check out the Retrax, I think that one is pretty well insulated. Marc
