Just rolled over 170k miles last week. Bought two new batteries today hoping to fix my slooow cranking problem. That started right after I gave someone a jump start a couple weeks ago. Truck almost didn't turn over at all this morning, so I figured it was time to get couple new batteries. $150 spent. When it's running the alt is charging 14+ v... Unfortuneatley, that didn't fix the problem....still cranks slooooow. :doah: Suppose I shoulda spent alittle more time diagnosing the problem before throwing parts at it. But hey, I have two new batteries! Anyways, so theres not much else it could be besides perhaps a bad cable between the starter and batteries or a hosed starter...Right? I hope it's not a starter....Checked prices on them, a new, not remanufactured starter is just under $200... I'm so used to buying starters for small block chevy's. Ima check out all the cable connections tommorrow in the daylight. Is there anything else I can take a look at? Is the solinoid on the starter itself? Or mounted seperate? I'm just desperatley hoping it's not a starter....That $200 was gonna go towards a #6 or #100 plate and 3kgsk set. *edit* BTW, what should the 12v be idleing at when fired up in the moring? Mine seems to idle low at 500rpm's or so....Is that right? When it warms up, it's up around 700+ or so...
95's are a little slow to idle in the morning. Thats how mine is and I've herd the same from others. Check the battery cable ends and the cable ends at the starter for burned ends/connections..................Somebody please slap me if I say end one more time.rotfl
Bad cables can sometimes be hard to diagnose. If you don't see an obvious problem at the *ENDS* rotfl or blistering of the insulation, then after a long hard start session, feel along the wire for excessively hot spots. But they are not too expensive generally, don't you want shiny new cables to go with your shiny new batteries anyway?
Should be idling around 750-800 in gear with the AC on, at operating temperature. There is an adjustment screw on the back of the injection pump throttle linkage. It helps to have someone pressing down on the accelerator to adjust the screw.
Well, the truck spun over like 2 times reeeaaally slow then quit this morning. Just clicks. Guess I'm not going to work today. Two new batteries....and now I need a starter. I'm gonna be into it close to $400....This is NOT a good time of year for this. I want to cry.
Have you checked the battery cables for corrosion inside the coating of the cables. Maybe time for new cables.
Replace the cables, it has solved cranking issues on two of my trucks, they can cause alot of headaches. Just go to your local autoparts store and get about 20 feet of cable, and some solder on ends for it. If that doesnt solve it, then break out the cash for a new starter.
I checked what I could at the terminals. All the battery ends of the cables look just fine. I stripped back a bit of the covering to get a look at the cables, nice shiny copper in there. It's pouring rain right now, I don't have any tools here at all....I just moved and haven't moved my tools to the new place yet. Just got off the phone with a friend, he's gonna bring me some tools, I'll yank the starter, have it tested, then go from there. If it tests ok, then I'll make up some cables, if not, new starter. Atleast it looks like an easy starter to remove- 3 bolts and the wires. Looks like $219 for a starter from Napa.
It was the starter....When the guy at Napa stuck it on the test machine, some of the magic blue smoke escaped...lol $220 later, I'm rollin again.
Good to hear the problem is solved. Hold on to your Napa receipt. I put a Napa lifetime on my grandpa's PSD and was replacing it a year later.
Awsome! Glad you figured it out. Now go buy a set of Larry B's starter contacts and install them in your "new" starter and it might be the last starter you put in truck. They have excellent instructions. My 11 year old Daughter even rebuilt my spare starter under supervision with those instructions.
