I'm encountering a weird phenomenon with my Tekonsha Commander.

With no trailer hooked up, my controller lights up (increasing red led's as I apply the brake pedal) when I hit the brakes. It has never done this before....

    is this normal?

I had never heard of the Tekonsha Commander so I did a Google search on it. According to what I found it is definetly old school. It may be time to upgrade. HOWEVER if it still works fine with a trailer than run it. It is also possible that your brake feed wire (the one that runs from the controller to the trailer plug) is either grounding on something or maybe even making contact with a +12v source somewhere and sending power back into the controller.

If you do decide to upgrade I would highly recommend either the Tekonsha Prodigy or P3. Do your shopping and you can find the prodigy for about $100 shipped.

I would recomend a Prodigy brake controller or the new Max brake brake controller. Both are very good units, Max Brake is really nice but costs $$$$ compared to a normal brake controller.
