I have a 2005 Cummins Dodge Ram. I just had a dealer oil change last week. This is my second oil change at the dealer since buying my truck back in August 05. I noticed while driving down the road, that when I usually have my ventilation system set to the dash vents, and set for just blowing in outside air at outside air temperature, I smell a burnt oil smell. I figured that some oil got dripped on a part of the engine that gets pretty hot......like the exhaust manifold, or exhaust pipe....etc. I can't see any drips anywhere. It's been a week since the oil change, and I still smell this smell after the engine is warmed up. There's no drips on my driveway either. Oil level on the dipstick looks fine too. It's not overfilled according to the dipstick. I understand that it doesn't take much spilled oil to make a burnt smell. Is this just something that needs to gradually burn-off from somewhere where I can see. I crawled under the rig trying to find a oily spot but can't see anything. I notice that the smell is strongest in the dash vents when I come to a stop and am at idle..i.e. a stop light.......etc. ........ Where does outside air get picked up from?
I wonder if the "tech" spilled oil in your cowl, beacuse I think that is where your ventalation draws air.
Ah reason 63 I won't let any dealer touch any of my trucks... It's most likely just oil spilled on the manifold. The filter is right up there pretty high on that side which could have spilled when being removed or they could have made a big mess on top of the valve cover filling it and it poured all over the manifold. Either way it takes a while to burn off.
Perfectly normal. You have a crannkcase vent that vents to atmosphere instead of into the stupid catch can and it tends to give off a bit of a odor for about 500-100 miles. Mine smells like Amsoil for about 500 miles then either I get used to it or it goes away. My 03 was the same.waytogo Also, some one may have spilled just a little bit on the exhaust manifold. But I haven't EVER done anything like that before, so I'm just guessing!:doah:
I just switched over to synthetic and it puts off the oder in a bad way. I thought that my turbo was burning oil because I could smell it on that side of the engine bay. After a few miles it's been getting better, glad to hear this is normal!
Follow-up: I have a few hundred miles on that oil change, and the burned oil smell is just about gone. Love my Cummins!!!!
Yes sir. You got that right.waytogo ....... Thanks again for all the advice and encouragement from all on the forum. ........
