I thought I read somewhere that the original purpose of clearance lights was to identify a vehicle as 80" or wider, so why do most single wheel 1-tons have them? Or am I way of base?
in case you tow a trailer 80 inches or wider.... now i just need amber bulbs and smoke lenses.... Grant
They're required in CA on duallys, but people like the look of them so they're optional on SRW trucks too. That might be a federal thing, not sure though. If you look at the order form for Ford, you have no option with a dually but it's optional on the F-250s and SRW F-350s.
Are you sure about that? I see tons of F-250s without them and I beleive that those are over 10k GVWR. Pretty sure that I see F-350s and Dodge 3500s without them too, but I guess I never paid that much attention.
I am fairly sure, but not 100%. I think this year is the first year that SRW D250's are over 10k though.
80" is the US DOT rule, single rear wheel trucks do not need them, However the 4-wheel steer units from GM are required, plus they have rear fender marker lights as the rear fenders are a bit wider then a normal single rear wheel, but less than a dually. They are an option on the 2500 trucks. I do not have roof markers on my 3500 SRW, 9900lb GVW, but did have them on my K-2500, 8600lb GVW suburban. Some Parkways in the East do not allow trucks over XXXXlb GVW, they scan and will stop trucks with marker lights on the roof to see if they carry a commercial registration, without they think its a half ton.
OK, I saw a 2005 F-350 SRW yesterday with no clearance lights, so either Ford is selling trucks that don't comply with CA law, or they aren't required for trucks just because they are over 10k GVWR.
