Okay, i don't have an EGT monitor yet and want to know how long to let the truck idle before shutting it down to get it down to the proper temp. also if the last couple of miles before i get home is at 35 mph and down hill is that sufficient to cool things down? i plan on adding an outlook later, but until then? is there a difference in cool down times between towing and not?
Under normal driving circumstances I would let it idle for 20 seconds or so before you shut it off. You probably don't even need to do that but better to play it safe. However, under heavy use (ie. towing for long periods of time) it is important to let the turbo cool down for at least a couple of minutes before you shut it down. If the turbo is under heavy use, the oil can get so hot that it can 'coke' up and freeze your bearings. The specific recommendations are in your owner's manual.
cool down Hey jeff ,cooler down when you come in off the interstate, running hot and heavy, let'er idle for a couple minutes before shut'in her down, you should notice your temp gauge back off a bit if you don't have other gauges, everything will be fine, good luck, mrgenzwaytogo Tow veh. 07,3/4 ton,2wd,5.9,6 speed, air raid dry with tube, cat delete, aero turbine muff,DR Performance module stage II,85 hp, Towed toy: 07,32' Jayco Eagle, tongue pull TT,about 10,000 gvwr on the trailer, The little binder hardly knows that it is back there...
After installing the gauges I dont idle when I pull off because of how fast it cools down. I have mine reading before the turbo and as soon as I turn off the cruise the temps drop to idle temps.
I agree with about 20 seconds on a normal drive and 1-2 minutes after a hard pull. We offer a Cool Down Timer that works off an existing thermocouple for easy installation.
