I just discovered a crack on the right side below the exhaust manifold. The crack is about 1 inch long and bearly drips coolant. Has anyone else had this problem? I am thinking about repairing the crack. I can buy some carbon rods for the welder. Any thoughts? Thanks Bert
it can be welded. some poeple have done it over on TDR and said that it worked of them. the bolck might be a 53 block that everybody fears will gernade itself if you do anything to the motor, but there are alot out there with nothing wrong with them, kind of luck of the draw. but it should work to weld it good luck!
Look at the block number. Should start with a 53. Sounds like the tyicall 53 block failure. If you have less than 100k miles, Cummins may replace teh block for you, depending on the service writer. It can be Lock and Stitch welded up to prevent leakage. The crack also has to be drilled to stop it from traveling any farther.
Found this on another site. It may be helpful. waytogo http://www.dieselbombers.com/showthread.php?t=5270&highlight=block
