I have a '99 gmc dually with drum rear brakes. I found a rear end out of a 2004 dually with disc brakes and was wondering if anyone had some insight.

I think you will need the master cylinder to go with it or at least a larger one.

It may involve some modification of the ABS as well

Do you know anyone who could let me know for sure. What kind of mods to the ABS, physical or computer?

Does the rear have a abs sensor on it or is it at the t case? I don't think my 98 has one at the rear axle and I don't think my brothers 01 does. If thats the case it will work no problem. I know guys swap rear discs in all the time and never touch the master but the dual piston calipers are huge on the HD's and the resivior on the master may not be up to it.

I just realized that the axle I purchased is out of a single wheels truck. I hope it will still work.

I made the same mistake and found out the hard way that the SRW and DRW axles wont interchange (leas in my application). The spring mounting pads were in the same location but the width of the entire diff as well as the hubs was off by quite a bit. I lucked out since I got the replacement rear diff dirt cheap and was able to resell it for what I paid for it though.
