I would be interested in hearing why you chose one over the other. I know the training wheels make for a very stable tow but would like to hear your list of pros and cons.
I chose a dually because you get a beefier rear axle and a much higher GVWR and GCWR. I want to use a slide-in camper and tow my truck on a tag trailer, even with the Ford dually (highest GVWR until getting into medium duty trucks) I'm going to be right at the GVWR. I realize that you can safely go over the GVWR, but I'm paranoid that I'm going to get in an accident or something and kill someone, then have my insurance company deny a claim because I was overloaded. If I had gotten a SRW truck in any brand I would have been grossly overloaded with anything but a popup slide-in camper and my trailer with a 1000 lb tongue weight. Rickmans would help, but it would suck to buy a new truck then have to dump $3000 into tires and wheels just to make it carry what I want. Another thing about the dually when using a slide-in is that if you blow a tire you don't have 3000 lbs of camper with a 10' high COG trying to tip your junk over at 65 mph. Basically I got it because, with such a large truck, I'd rather make it a bit larger and more capable, this way I have the ability to do more with it as my needs change.
I chose SRW because I wanted a shortbox, and because I pull a bumper pull trailer so I don't need max GVWR. I'll be pulling my mom's 5th wheel but the pin weight is pretty light (under 2,000 lbs). If I often carried a heavy load, I'd have a DRW. Otherwise, SRW is fine. My truck is going to be nowhere near overloaded pulling the 9k my trail rig and trailer weigh, so I went SRW.
i bought a short box SRW with the intention of making it a Short box DRW. i traded in a dually and will alwas prefer a dually. only problem isthey dont make a short box DRW. my options are an aftermarket bed or build custom glass fenders..... in the case of the 3rd gen dodges the rear axle is the same SRW to DRW, just diff dimensions and hubs. load capacity of the axle itself is unchanged. just load capacity due to tires Grant
I chose a SRW because I like the way they look better than duallys and I don't think I will actually tow much where it would require a second pair of tires anyway. The heaviest trailer we have is a 20' gooseneck flatbed and with a trailer that length having triple axles it would be hard to over load the tongue. I didn't feel i needed duals since we have a '76 C30 dually and a '98 C30 dually, but the '98 may be gone in 6 months to a year because my dad is getting the diesel bug for a dually crew cab dmax. We may get into the cattle business soon and if that happens I will need a DRW and i'll probably look for an 01-02 Dodge cummins HO 6spd 4wd Dually to pull a cattle trailer.
I went with a SRW truck due to my towing needs that do not exceed what was offered. I was tired of the training wheels and realized that I did not need the MAXIMUM that was offered. Besides I still got a Dana 80 rear axle in a SRW truck ! Tom
Like others said, I don't need the capacity of a dually, so I got SRW. Heck, I don't *need* the capacity of my 2500HD either, but it's nice to have more than I need for "safety factor" and future options. For that reason, I would probably have gone on to DRW except that this is also my daily driver, and I can still fit into "compact" spaces if need be (more than you might expect around here) .
Hmmmm well kindof the same lines were I didn't 'feel' like I needed a dullie. Some of it also had to do with price. about 7K more for the dullie and with my wife in control of my budjet and me pushing to get the LT, I didn't persue getting a dullie. I don't regret it at all. I love my rig just like it is. I too plan on getting a slide-in camper. I don't want a full decked out slide in cuz the loaded ones hang off the back way too far and I will be bumper towing my K5. I want a pop up that fits flush with the rear of the bed and the COG is much lower and they are much lighter than a full hardside slide in. That and they are 1/2 the cost. I just need someting to keep me from needing a hotel room on long long road trips and from sleeping in a tent. That and winter camping/ wheeling will be possiable nowwaytogo I simply wanted a towrig with a place to sleepimp: Hell I may even get my wife to camp again...hmmmm maby that is not such a good idea after allrotfl
